Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu Movie Review

Ratings:3/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN (IBNLive)
Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu, starring Imran Khan and Kareena Kapoor, is a competently made romantic-comedy with a predictable story at its core .It’s fairly typical stuff, and first-timer Shakun Batra adds all the usual ingredients. If you’ve seen even three decent rom-coms, you know where this is headed. Yet these characters feel real, and they grow on you gradually despite their standard-issue problems. At 1 hour and 50 minutes, the film is light and breezy, and mercifully never turns too syrupy for your taste. I’m going with three out of five for director Shakun Batra’s Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu. I was particularly impressed by the unconventional but entirely appropriate ending. I think you will be too.

EK MAIN AUR EKK TU is shades apart from the above named movies. Imagine a guy who has lived his entire life based on decisions taken by his parents. Come to think of it, he's not living his life, but his parent's expectations. And then comes a girl who opens his eyes and shows him what he's missing out on. EK MAIN AUR EKK TU is more of a coming-of-age story, essentially. Intrinsically, EK MAIN AUR EKK TU may be a rom-com, but it's not anything that you may have witnessed on the Bollywood screen earlier. On the whole, EK MAIN AUR EKK TU is a slick, breezy and pleasant fare that should click with its target audience -- the youth -- and also has the potential to woo the older spectators as well. This take on love is refined, smart, lively and thoroughly pleasing thanks to its characters, conversations and the inherent humor. A perfect date movie. A film stuffed with exquisite moments that are sure to bring a wide smile on your face. Simply put, you cannot afford to miss EK MAIN AUR EKK TU. Just go for it!

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu shows what first-rate direction and a cute but brave script can do to the done-to-death story of opposites getting attracted to each other. EMAET has heart, charm and an enviable lightness of being. And it certainly helps that the lead players are in fine form.EK Main Aur Ek Tu is the sweetest heartbreak that Bollywood has conjured in a long, long time. It works both as a college buddy movie and a date movie; for the young and the not-so-young. You can even watch it alone. And if a gorgeous girl asks you for a drink, go ahead, take a chance. As Rahul will tell you, it will be worth every second of your life.

What’s Good: The performances; the entertaining second half; the songs. What’s Bad: The lack of universality of the script which will find less appreciation among the masses.Verdict: Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is an entertaining and enjoyable fare for the city audience. Watch it for the performances and the clever handling of a different story.

Shakun Batra's Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a coming-of-age film. Not for Kareena and Imran's characters, though, but for the industry and the audience. It's okay to say b-u-m without the beep. And talk sex among friends, without a beep. Admit it. Imran Khan as the vulnerable Rahul evolves in front of your eyes. From uptight to edgy, he goes from boy to man. Kareena takes up from where she left off in Jab We Met. I thought this was better.I'll go with three and a half stars for this film plus a half for the superb editing, so four out of five.Auntiji's do watch it.

EK Main aur Ekk Tu’ is a half and half : it gets where it needs to with flair, but not enough surprises. The film passes by pleasantly enough past all its expected roadsigns, providing a smile and an occasional chuckle.Still, this is nice enough for a one-off cosy date movie, where you can want a personable, rich Rahul and a pretty, warm-hearted Ri to fall in love, to banter, to riff. That’s me and that’s you.

EMAET is neither on the epic side like Dharma Productions' great, grand ancestors nor weighed down by an overload of pop culture references of those that define the genre. Instead the confection's appeal lies in its underplayed wit, quirky within plausibility protagonists and a refreshing disregard for conventional conclusions. EMAET's endearing, unassuming quality and refusal to take the run-of-the-mill route, like Dharma's Wake Up Sid , makes it a much better film than I expected to see. What's more? It's barely two hours.

It is full of honest, warm moments that - to their credit - work without the manipulation most directors resort to in films belonging to this genre. Instead, Batra relies on sharp dialogue, and some well-etched out characters. I’d go a step further and say that the film is the best you would have seen recently in the two genres it melds together - a romantic comedy and a coming-of-age-drama, something Wake Up Sid just about fell short of.All in all, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a delightful film that keeps getting better along the way, and ends fabulously. Clocking under two hours, the film is a breezy watch that will leave you with a smile. Highly recommended.

Batra directs with a cool candour, avoids shrieking melodrama and in fact, the end is one of the subtlest seen at the movies in years.Derivative of a DVD libraryful of Hollyhits ranging from The Graduate and Sweet November to What Happens in Vegas, the plot works essentially because the direction is kept at a low simmer. Despite quite a few lapses into cheesy sections ( a toilet room seduction, and grading each other’s bums, eeewww) , the overall result is pretty hip and sophisticated.

Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu begins on a thin note as it looks like a replica of Hollywood flick What Happens In Vegas courtesy accidental marriage aspect but, in due course story takes a new turn. The film however, is full of surprises post interval with various powerful moments which are quite mind-boggling. Stunning performances, editing, cinematography and extremely unique climax makes it a special film. Monotonous approach towards story-writing and screenplay along with music are the drawbacks. Overall, Ek Main Aur Ekk Tu is a typical popcorn entertainment with super-amazing climax which puts it in a different league altogether.
