I Am Singh Movie Review

The issue -- racial discrimination -- isn't new either. It has been attempted in the past  as well. You'd expect I AM SINGH to at least say something we haven't heard/watched earlier, but the serious issue isn't highlighted convincingly, except in a few sequences in the flashback. I AM SINGH appeals in bits and spurts. A few sequences do hold your attention, but injecting 'entertainment' in an issue-based film looks out of place. The post-interval portions only head downwards and the momentum to highlight racial attacks on Asians is childishly handled. Besides, the generous usage of English -- especially in the courtroom sequence -- has its limitations. The soundtrack is also lackluster. The acting is below the mark as well.On the whole, I AM SINGH is too weak a fare to leave any impact whatsoever.

Fortunately, there are bits and pieces here and there which keep the drama flowing. The family's attempt to secure justice for the boys has an earnest ring to it. While one brother has been murdered, the other has been arrested and falsely accused for the murder of his own brother. It takes an attractive American lawyer to provide succour to the beleaguered family with her promise to secure the release of the wronged son. And does she deliver? How! Meant as a ready reckoner on Sikhism, the film should have had a larger appeal. Unfortunately it will find its target audience, mostly in its own community.

This story definitely had all the possibilities and the potential — it is based on the backlash on the Asian community post 9/11. On top of that, I am Singh aimed to go down at a micro-level and portray the suffering of a family while showing the heinous hate-crimes that raged on in the neighbourhood. The story also aimed to show how Pakistanis suffered as well as Indians and how suddenly wearing a turban became a threat to life for many. It was a great idea that this film ruined completely.I am Singh fails in all the principal departments that make a good film — casting, acting, screenplay, editing and everything else.

I am Singh seems like an example of having one's heart in the right place, but fails while delivering the same. I Am Singh falls into a different genre that carries a strong issue of racism and hate crime. The story had immense potential to strike a raw nerve, but the filmy touch to the screenplay and been-there-done-that kind of situations, spoil the ship for a hap'orth of tar.A serious subject, but commercial treatment to it can leave a bad taste in the mouths of regular cinegoers and also for people, who crave for subject based films. The strong message of peace and fight against racism are the plus points. I Am Singh is aimed at the masses in North India and overseas, which assures certain business for the film.
