Jo Hum Chahein Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN

For love or money – that’s the age-old problem rearing its head in Jo Hum Chahein, an urban romance starring newcomers Sunny Gill and Simran Mundi. What helps this mostly formulaic film forward is the spiffy camerawork and a music score that’s catchy and fresh, especially the glossy Ishq hothon se number, shot in picturesque Ladakh.Jo Hum Chahein endeavors to strike a fresh note, but alas, it’s let down by the weight of its trite dialogues. I’m going with two out of five for Jo Hum Chahein – it’s a decent first effort, even though it smacks of sameness.

JO HUM CHAHEIN is a coming of age story of Rohan [Sunny Gill] and Neha [Simran Mundi], two young, hip, effervescent individuals whose lives change forever once they meet and fall in loveDirector Pawan Gill, who has also penned its script, chooses to narrate a story that not only focuses on romance, but also on the aspirations of the youth and how far can they go to accomplish their goals. In doing so, Pawan doesn't take the tried and tested route to narrate his tale. The love story isn't the type that would make you exclaim, 'Not again'. But the entire stock market perspective is what could've been lucidly elucidated for the average moviegoer to decipher. However, despite the blemishes, there's no denying that Pawan has handled a couple of poignant moments well. The twist in the tale and the confrontation between the lead pair in the middle of the film is super. On the whole, JO HUM CHAHEIN is a decent watch that will require a strong word of mouth to leave a mark.

He's in a hurry to scale the ladder, even if it means a bit of moral wheeling dealing with customers. She is more grounded and doesn't believe in compromising on her principles. Naturally, she finds it hard to forgive and forget a dalliance of his. So far so good. But problems begin when the rest of the film becomes one long string of sequences where Sunny tries to say sorry and Simran retaliates with what's in a sorry.Essentially a non-happening film with mediocre acting.

To be fair to the film, the male lead Sunny Gill (despite his hopeless Hrithik Roshan hangover) makes a handsome debut. Also he's decent enough in the acting and emoting department. And devoid of a star-studded cast, the film still boasts of high production values. What goes horribly wrong with the film then is that it's backed by an outmoded plotline that is certainly not jo hum chahein. But largely, Jo Hum Chahein certainly doesn't have what we wish from a film - entertainment!

What’s Good: Songs are fairly nice. What’s Bad: The routine story; the twisted screenplay that doesn’t involve the audience; the ordinary performances.Verdict: Jo Hum Chahein is a boring and weak fare which will find the going very tough.Watch or Not?: Watch it if you like to watch love stories with newcomers.

For a film filled with newcomers, there seems to have been an attempt at a story, even though the writer is clearly in love with ‘Wall Street’.But the inexperience shows all around. The leads look as if they have just strolled off modeling assignments, and speak out their lines, putting their best profiles forward.

Here, first time director Pawan Gill in a film produced by Aman Gill and the lead actor being Sunny Gill, bungles big time. He has two fresh faces but gives them a half-baked story to make a meal of. Obviously they will bungle. The story is clumsy to the core.Nothing works in this film, the story, acting, songs or the locations.

What could have been an interesting premise (though seems heavily borrowed from Hollywood film, Wallstreet), ends up being a below average caper, thanks to the lack of deftness in Pawan Gill's direction. Even while the movie is moving at a snail's pace, the actors for some reason seem to be in a race to finish their dialogues. If you are an incurable romantic, it won't hurt you to watch this one once. It would be like going on a date with a beautiful but not so bright girl, just for the heck of it.
