Jab Tak Hai Jaan Movie Review

The truth is that whether you agree with, or aren't a fan of Chopra's brand of love stories, he conveys them with complete conviction. Chopra and his leading man lend Jab Tak Hai Jaan an indelible charm. It's that charm, coupled with the filmmaker's trademark freshness, passion, and tenderness, that still keeps you invested in these characters and their star-crossed romance.I'm going with three out of five for the late Yash Chopra's Jab Tak Hai Jaan. Despite its many script problems, it's a consistently watchable film that oozes with feeling and real emotion. A fitting swan song.

JAB TAK HAI JAAN is not your typical love story. It has the old-world charm written all over it, with twists and turns plenty. It would be a disservice if one were to reveal the journey of the three principal characters -- Samar, Meera and Akira -- since the plot changes from conventional to unconventional in its second hour. JAB TAK HAI JAAN is attention-grabbing from inception till conclusion. The drama only soars higher and the complex love story gets more and more gripping as the conflict between the characters come to the fore. Mind you, JAB TAK HAI JAAN is not the usual 'love triangle', with two women fighting for the same guy. Nor can you compare it with any Yash Chopra film of yore either. On the whole, JAB TAK HAI JAAN resonates an oft-repeated fact: Love stories will come and go. But no one will make them like Yash Chopra. Just don't miss this heartwarming love story!

Jab Tak Hai Jaan is the swan song of Yash Chopra, the big daddy of romance. Every frame is picture perfect, the emotions are well nuanced. But there is one inherent flaw--the story by Aditya Chopra is hackneyed. You will not like Jab Tak Hai Jaan if mushy romances are not your staple. The movie doesn't have the intensity of some of Yash Chopra's earlier romances like Daag, Kabhie-Kabhie, Silsila and Chandni. But it still has the stamp of the man who made some of the best romantic fare in Bollywood.

In any case, you don't go to a Yash Chopra movie to delve into realism or the messiness of relationships. You go to partake in a fantasy of swooning, idealised love - and Jab Tak Hai Jaan delivers plenty of that. This film has all the elements you would want in a Yash Chopra film - gorgeously shot locations in the UK and Kashmir, lavish songs and three inherently noble lead characters who struggle gallantly against their individual obligations. But what Jab Tak Hai Jaan does not have is a coherent plot.Jab Tak Hai Jaan is too tangled to transport you. At almost 180 minutes, it also requires enormous patience. But I recommend that you see it. Because only Yash Chopra could make heartache so attractive and ennobling that his characters wear it like a badge of honor.

A Yash Chopra drama that treads very familiar territory slickly - and a fair bit too slowly - but does so with an old-world sincerity that somehow makes most of it bearable. Rather like its leading man, who is often made to balance entire scenes on his dimples, grinning so wide his eyes appear closed. There are times in Jab Tak Hai Jaan when it's hard not to feel embarrassed for Shah Rukh Khan having to work with material this tedious - and yet he, despite the exaggerated show of youngness, manages inexplicably to charm. This is his film, and, against all odds, he works it well.

The mushy moments at the heart of the love story might feel a tad pulpy at times. ButJab Tak Hai Jaan leaves a soothing afterglow. You have seen it all before, notably in Dil To Pagal Hai and Veer-Zaara. Yet, Jab Tak Hai Jaan exudes a surprising degree of freshness. It stems from the quirky new-age twists that the screenplay throws into the mix. Watch Jab Tak Hai Jaan not just for the obvious sentimental reason but for the fact that it shows, for one last time, what Bollywood will miss now that the undisputed master of romantic sagas is no more.

Aditya Chopra’s story is outstanding, with plenty of twists and turns. The two love stories – of Samar with Meera, and of Akira with Samar – are wonderful and completely different from each other. On the whole, Jab Tak Hai Jaan is poetry on celluloid. It is a movie marvel. It is a piece of cinematic history. It is a blockbuster… sorry, a super blockbuster. It will have a long and meritorious run in the multiplexes and cinemas.

The story may be set in today’s times, but the theme is very Yash Chopra, wherein true love happens only once in a lifetime, and it trumps all else. Finally, though, what keeps you with the film is Shah Rukh Khan who is first-rate. Watch this one for Shah Rukh, who can still do the dimpled boy wonder and the older, mature lover with a wry smile and wounded wink and sexy nudge.

What’s Good: The well-played out love stories; the music; the direction and cinematography. What’s Bad: The tiring climax; some performances. Loo Break: None. Watch or Not?: Jab Tak Hai Jaan is worth a watch. Jab Tak Hai Jaan is worth a watch, and that’s not just to pay your last respects to the legend Yash Chopra. It’s a movie that puts the mushy, filmy craziness back in love stories.

The King of Romance behind the camera directing the Badshah of Romance in front of the camera. And a script that boasts of solid, undying love. No, there cannot be a better way to portray love on the silver screen. ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’ has nailed that – at least for the immediate future. Shah Rukh Khan, you don’t really need words of praise or adulation; but go ahead and take a bow!. In case you still haven’t, go watch ‘Jab Tak Hai Jaan’. You can thank the Kings of Romance once you’re done with the film… nahi bhoolenge hum, jab tak hai jaan! Four cheers for this one!
