Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Madhureeta Mukherjee  Site:Times Of India
With permanently furrowed brows, weary eyes, and a perfectly dyed hair-piece, Aditya lives every day like it was Monday. Until one day he wakes up to find it's Sunday. And it's the dreaded Sunday the next day, and the next. What makes it worse is that no one ready to believe the oddity of his freaky situation. Harrowed and beaten by time, he desperately tries to end Sunday-everyday phenomenon, but alas, no luck. Enter Benaamkumar (Anupam Kher) - for the lack of a creative name - who enlightens him about simpler joys of life, giving and living. The seed of the idea is impressive. Outlandish too. Is it novel? No way! The core of the story is faintly borrowed from the Bill Murray Hollywood comedy, Groundhog Day. After a point, we get the big idea, but the movie continues to preach. And we're waiting to break away from this 'timeless' Sunday-go-round.

The basic storyline of the film is made with the concept that it's the journey that matters, not the destination. The screenplay takes a very complicated route to put forth the idea. The structure is non-linear, that too of a complex nature. The first half belongs to Sachin Khedekar while the second half rests on the shoulders of Anupam Kher. This is not for punch line lovers, neither it is for the fans of slapstick comedies. This can give you enough food for thought, but then again everything depends on how clear is your conscience and what you want from a film. 'Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein' doesn't boast of stars but Pramod Joshi cares to use the medium of cinema for a good cause. The subject is complex but it has the potential to make you think.

The first half creates excitement and curiosity, but a little dragged treatment makes the effort tasteless in parts. However, the movie picks up with Anupam Kher’s impactful character in second half. Excellent performance by Sachin Khedekar and Anupam Kher is one of the prime attractions and also the message to live a life is one reason to grab a ticket. No major star cast, no groovy numbers and lack of publicity will act as a hindrance for the film. If you have an intention to see a finer execution of thought that life is about living and not about existing, however, without many expectations on the story front, then Chhodo Kal Ki Baatein won’t disappoint you!
