Gali Gali Mein Chor Hain Movie Review

Setting up the sort of premise that’s usually treated with a much lighter hand in the popular television sitcom Office Office, the makers of Gali Gali Chor Hai construct a well-intentioned but labored tale of the common man’s vulnerability against day-to-day corruption in society.Gali Gali Chor Hai doesn’t say much that hasn’t been said before, and it doesn’t say it interestingly either. Never smart enough to be described as a satire, it fails ultimately because it’s dreadfully dull.I’m going with two out of five for director Rumi Jaffrey’s Gali Gali Chor Hai. Even a sleazy item song by Pakistani starlet Veena Malik is unlikely to shake you out of your slumber

Though corruption is a much abused, oft-repeated and oft-depicted theme in Bollywood, what sets GALI GALI CHOR HAI apart is that it incorporates the recent incidents in the narrative. It's relatable and the characters, identifiable. But what could've been a hard-hitting statement against corruption mellows after a point. This happens in the post-interval portions, when things begin to look impractical and ineffectual. On the whole, GALI GALI CHOR HAI amuses intermittently. Fortunately, the movie goes public at a juncture when anti-corruption appears to be the essence of the season. But the film could've done with a far more hard-hitting conclusion!

What’s Good: A few satirical scenes; the entertaining dialogues; the acting. What’s Bad: The small-town feel of the film; the lack of real entertainment for the city audience of today; the over-stretching of the drama; the lack of a proper climax.Verdict: Gali Gali Chor Hai will not get the appreciation of the audience. Given its poor start, it cannot hope to pick up, due to lack of positive word of mouth.Loo break: Not really.Watch or Not?: Watch it if you want to see a well-intentioned film which also boasts of good performances.

Gali Gali Mein Chor Hain, which was shown to Anna Hazare at a special screening, starts off promisingly with the pro-activist title-track sung by Kailash Kher and there is some fizz in the initial exchanges between Bharat and his father (Satish Kaushik) and the local politicians-cum-goons. But soon the movie loses its comic timing. But in the end, Gali Gali Chor Hai doesn't live up to its promise.Even the impressive supporting cast Satish Kaushik and Annu Kapoor, who relishes the part of a corrupt havaldar, fail to rise above the script's mediocrity. Just like the anti-corruption movement at the moment.

Anchored in the David Dhawan-style of filmmaking, director Rumy Jafry turns a new leaf in this career with Gali Gali Chor Hai, in which he casts a satirical eye on the pressing social concern of our times -- the common man in the grip of corruption. Its timing couldn't have been more correct, with the public mood so intently focused on corruption in the Anna Hazare era. That's probably the only good thing one can say about this film. Otherwise, it's a product of lame writing, inept direction and sincere but ineffective acting. When you do laugh, you mostly laugh at the scene, not along with it.

For a movie that slots itself as comedy/drama, GALI GALI CHOR HAI leaves a sobering impact. In fact, it has you tottering out of the auditorium after having driven home its point with such finesse that it makes you wonder how Rumi Jaffery managed this Houdini act!'Houdini act' because it's a subject so real and so close to home that it has never been addressed with such intelligence. True, there have been movies on politics and politicians and the corrupt system; but the way the 'system' is looked into in a holistic way, through the life of just one common man, is indeed an eye-opener

Beyond a point, the attempts to induce laughs over Bharat's misery become as monotonous as a wad of gum chewed for over an hour. The common man's rage, which you expect to dazzle you (or rescue you from the repeated adventures of Bharat babu) doesn't happen right until the end of the film, by when, you want to clap simply out of the delight that the film is over.Gali Gali Chor Hai may hope to ride the Anna Hazare tide but it does nothing to put a point across and it certainly fails to entertain.

The story seems to have taken its reference from the agitation of Anna Hazare, the fight of the Aam Admi. However, it highlights the frustration of the present day common man, who is vulnerable to politics and the corruption present all around. The title is justified with the narration of the story. Good jokes on politicians and the use of pun is tactful. A bit too stretched misery and an abrupt ending prove to be the dampeners.Akshaye’s performance, especially the scene where he slaps the cop and the corrupt politician leaves an impact. The victims of corruption and politics will be able to relate to the plight of Bharat. An abrupt ending and little publicity will act as a hindrance for the film.
