Oh My God (OMG) Movie Review

OMG: Oh My God!, adapted from the popular Gujarati play Kanji Viruddh Kanji (itself evidently inspired by the Australian film, The Man Who Sued God), makes a compelling argument against the commercialization of religion, but the tone of the film is so shrill, the approach so preachy, you feel like you’re being tied down and forced to listen to a sermon for two-and-a-half hours. In a sea of dumb Bollywood comedies (many starring Akshay Kumar himself), this one at least starts off a debate. For that alone, it’s not entirely a write-off. I’m going with two out of five for Oh My God!. Carry cotton for your ears to drown out all the shouting!

OMG - OH MY GOD! carries a social message, a significant one, but the best part is, it does so without losing the wit and humor. Most importantly, it doesn't get preachy, nor does it deviate into the sermonizing mode. The film demonstrates Kanji as a nastik or a non-believer in God at the very outset, who, paradoxically, uses religion to run his business. The episodes in the first hour raise a chuckle, in fact you wear a smile ceaselessly. The turn of events in the latter part gives the film that extra sheen, thus raising the bar. The courtroom drama is transfixing and the underlying message that God dwells within us is profoundly heartwarming. On the whole, OMG - OH MY GOD! is a thought-provoking adaptation of a massively successful play. A movie tackling a sensitive and an untouched subject matter, it will find its share of advocates and adversaries, but the social message the movie conveys comes across loud and clear and that's one of the prime reasons why OMG - OH MY GOD! becomes a deserving watch.

OMG: Oh My God is Paresh Rawal's movie - and one of his best. Akshay Kumar plays a small and sacred role but OMG is largely powered by Rawal's performance as Kanjilal Mehta, a cynical Gujarati shopkeeper in Mumbai's Chor Bazaar, hardcore atheist who merrily dupes the believing into buying Krishna statues. On the downside, OMG's production values are not high-gloss and it sags and looks stagey at times. Importantly though, in a nation obsessed with taweezes and tonsures, fasts and fasaads, the symbolic over the sensible, OMG conveys a serious message this festive season - God is to be found in human beings. And, rather like Hindi films of an earlier age, it does so in a light and unusual way.

While the first few reels are boring, the dramatic portions begin a little before interval and involve the viewers. What the audience like very much are two things Рthe novelty of the subject and, therefore, its unpredictability, and the expos̩ on the Godmen and the priests. On the other hand, the way the screenplay has been penned, the drama appears quite far-fetched and unbelievable at places, robbing the film of the plausible element. On the whole, Oh My God! has novelty value and offers reasonably good entertainment.

OMG Oh My God has an unusual, engaging subject. It’s a film about our relationship with God, how instead of being God-loving, we’ve become God-fearing, how religion has become a business run by God-men who in fact aren’t very spiritual at all. . Eventually Oh My God dissipates into a lecture. The intentions are good but the preaching is boring. I’m going with two and a half stars for OMG Oh My God. The half star is for Paresh Rawal who as usual, rises above the material.

OMG-Oh My God creates a hard-hitting premise where its lead protagonist decides to dispute this rigid system by dragging God and the business of religion to court.Lampooning several well-known heavyweights in this sphere, Oh My God is furiously irreverent when it comes to making a point and telling its viewer what a fool he or she is. This audacity is its very strength. Ditto for its powerful dialogue and sharp logic richly articulated through Kanji's furious criticism of callous wastage of resources, discrimination in devotion and ridiculous expenditure under the pretext of grand customs and hollow traditions. What hurts Oh My God somewhat is the long-winded climax.Oh My God is a brave and absorbing blend of satire, fable and fantasy that brings our attention to the misuse and commercialisation of religion

When a film – or at least its voluble protagonist – questions the very existence of God, should its makers expect any divine help when it is stuck in a morass of mediocrity? Mercifully, OMG Oh My God!, for all its flaws, has the services of the redoubtable Paresh Rawal to fall back on. The thespian pulls off a rescue act that borders on the miraculous. But even he cannot fully salvage the film’s weaker moments – and there are many.OMG is frequently weighed down by verbose and preachy passages that, besides overstaying their welcome, are marred by unabashed overacting by some members of the supporting cast. But what the hell, OMG, even at its worst, does not ever deteriorate into WTF, thanks to the wondrous presence of Paresh Rawal. It's certainly not a waste of time.

Umesh Shukla's film, 'OMG — Oh My God!' is a well-intentioned film but the execution could have been better. Shukla very competently succeeds in conveying the message that God has been reduced to mere symbolism in the modern world. What prevents this movie from becoming brilliant is the uneven plot trajectory. While some of the dialogues and scenes are really well-written, the first half suffers from being overtly preachy in parts. However, Umesh Shukla should be applauded for making a film that is noble at heart and makes quite a few valid points that are sure to resonate with not only the youth but a lot of us who blindly follow religious practices without logic.

Adapted from a Gujarati play named Kanji Virrudh Kanji, Oh My God is for one a sardonic take on blind faith and people’s belief in God men.Though the film's plot is a point that has been debated often, it has never before presented on this large a scale. The screenplay of the movie is excellent, with witty dialogues that have been intelligently written. Courtroom scenes where Kanjibhai presents his case are quite amusing. The direction is good and cinematography is perfect. What takes the movie to a different level is the performance. With a well-crafted character and excellent dialogues, Paresh Rawal carries the whole film as he makes you laugh, feel pity for him and even question your own faith.

Oh. My.God. I said this aloud when the film began, my reaction one of blank surprise and then delight. In the current atmosphere of rising conservatism and religious extremism, was it really possible to have a film which would talk up the ills attached to religious practices? Could a filmmaker be brave enough, and that’s the only word that comes to mind, to take on all those thousands of outraged souls who’d be shown up for what they indulge in daily: doing all sorts of immoral things and then demanding expiation from their deities? ‘Oh My God’ does this, and we commend the film, adapted from the popular Gujarati play, “Krishan vs Kanhaiya’, for its subject and treatment.

What’s Good: The concept; the performances; the witty comebacks and dialogues. What’s Bad: The movie seems to steer away from the main issue; the unsatisfactory explanations.Loo Break: Not really.Watch or Not?: Watch OMG Oh My God! for the interesting arguments and repartees. For once, there’s a movie that wants you to use your brains instead of just clapping and whistling away at the mindless action/sex scenes. Watch OMG Oh My God also because it has good performances and an interesting concept.

Beware: Many are going to feel offended. But if you scratch the surface, you will see the truth behind this teaching. In a country plagued by religious beliefs, OH MY GOD! comes as a bold move. A move that is likely to be viewed fanatically by those immersed in religious rituals forgetting the simple truth of living. But for those with wisdom, this movie is like, "Oh My God. Really!"
