Lanka Movie Review

On paper, yes, the concept does catch your attention, but the true test lies in making the moviegoer stay glued to the goings-on for the next two hours. LANKA has some spellbinding moments, but they are few and far between to leave an indelible impression. On the whole, LANKA has some shining moments, but they are few and far between. The entire drama, which leads to a violent culmination, looks farcical and is difficult to absorb. Besides, the conflict is resolved in the most clichéd manner. Clearly, the writer chooses an unconventional premise, but doesn't squeeze it to the maximum. The slow pacing of the movie is another turn off. Notwithstanding the shaky script, Maqbool Khan has handled a number of sequences with competency. A few dramatic moments, especially the tension-filled ones, have been handled skillfully.

How about a plot? A bunch of Bhaisaab’s goons try to take over a piece of land. Group gets killed. ‘Ram’ kills off all the farmers. Gang war carries on. That’s the plot.“People in Bombay will find this weird… There are so many small town girls in similar Lankas,” the film’s narrator repeatedly promises. If we could be sucked in to believing this story instead, such verbal claims would not be necessary.

The plot is not exactly original but seems to work. Manoj Bajpai is, as always, flawless in his performance as the quintessential villain. His depiction of Jaswant Bhaisahab as a terrifying figure, a borderline psychopath, is convincing and hair-raising at times. The film stretches post interval and you will find yourself checking your watch a few times. The director (Maqbool Khan) could have done a bit more to develop the plot at a faster pace and given the lady of the movie a little more to do.Watch of you must, check out the stellar performances.

While this film could have gone down as another ordinary story, the Ramayana analogy moderately succeeds in giving it more character (though it judiciously employs merely three characters from the epic). The plotline isn't entirely inventive and one has seen thematically similar interpretations. The film is completely designed in and around Manoj Bajpayee's character and the actor justifies the immense scope he gets with an authoritative performance. Director Maqbool Khan shows restraint and refinement in crafting his first film. This Lanka, though not full of gold, has some shining moments. Finally there's a film about Raavan which belongs to its Raavan!

Frankly, UP has been belted enough for crime stories and political vendettas to hold any more interest to the viewers. Unless it is packaged like the films of the 80s the way DABAANG did, UP and films on its system will continue to bore. Big time. So will the talented Bajpayee.

Apart from the main question, why the hell should anyone watch this movie, there are other issues that keep coming up. Like why doesn't Sisodiya marry her? Looks like that would have solved most of the problems. Oh, he does offer a halfhearted, totally non-convincing explanation at the end. But by then one has lost all interest in who is in love with whom and who is dying or living.Lanka evokes no emotions, except feel sorry for tremendously talented actors like Manoj Bajpai and Yashpal Sharma.

What’s Good: Manoj Bajpayee’s acting; the dialogues; the drama in the first half. What’s Bad: The second half; the convenient screenplay; the lack of hit songs; the slow pace of the film.Verdict: Lanka lacks in star, entertainment and promotional value. Flop!
