Kenneth Branagh’s film version of Agatha Christie’s classic 1934 novel is a lavish but plodding affair. Murder on the Orient Express is directed by Branagh, and also stars the veteran Shakespearean actor as Hercule Poirot, the iconic Belgian detective character who featured in several of the author’s stories.I’m going with two and a half out of five for Murder on the Orient Express. It’s a bloated but underwhelming adaptation that feels as creaky as the train’s wheels. Such a shame.

The end result is a handsomely produced but inert mystery. I admired the lengthy tracking shots and the beautiful scenery and costumes. It’s also fun to see the massive star-cast introduced – it reminded me of the star-studded song Deewangi in Om Shanti Om – but once these heavy-weights have gathered, Branagh doesn’t give them enough to do. Even the mighty Dench is reduced to a sideshow. If you like arrogant detectives with superhuman powers of observation, my suggestion is go with Benedict Cumberbatch as Sherlock. This rendition of Poirot is creaky and tedious.

Loaded with mysterious intentions, cheeky humour, clever repartee and an ensemble cast that comprises some of cinema's biggest names, Murder on the Orient Express makes for an intriguing watch. Strangers being stranded on a stalled train makes for a great premise, given the thrill of finding a killer lurking around.Overall, despite the glitches and avalanches, thanks to a stellar cast and gripping source material, this mysterious train journey is worth taking. Does it have a twist in the end? You have to watch the movie to know that.

Working from an adaptation by Michael Green (Logan, Blade Runner 2049), Branagh throws in a couple of action scenes in an attempt to ramp up the tension. In a departure from the source material, the narrative even tacks on a Jerusalem-set prologue and ends with the suggestion of another murder most foul in the near future. Even those who know the plot will agree that the climactic reveal-cum-solution is conveyed with panache. Climb aboard the ... Orient Express, then, for a ride back to a time when even killers dressed to thrill.
