MAI... banks heavily on the emotional quotient, making you think about the woman who helped her son take the first steps, but the ungrateful son deserts her when she needs to take her last ones. Loaded with emotions, with heart wrenching situations, MAI... is a sincere attempt at telling an uncomplicated story with straightforwardness, with episodes that tug at your heartstrings. On the whole, MAI... is an honest attempt. It moves you on several occasions thanks to its emotional quotient, but it needs a strong word of mouth and patronage to sustain from its target audience -- the families.Visit Site for more

Mai (mother in Marathi) happens to be the film debut of India's legendary singer Asha Bhosle and she impresses you with her acting ability too! While her performance is a highlight of the film, the subject is cliched. Bollywood has made umpteen movies revolving around helpless parents and their ungrateful, insensitive children. Mai however has its moments when it comes to showing the mother-daughter bond. The film tries too hard to be tragic. Asha Bhosle slips into the role of Mai effortlessly. Ashaji’s ‘entry,’ as one would say in filmi parlance, is superb. In that one scene, she sets her character to perfection. You know you are going to watch the story of an elderly lady who is clearly facing the unpleasant ravages of old age. Unfortunately, the rest of the film does not live up to that promise.But Ashaji, being Ashaji, always manage to surprise. In this case, her ace is her performance in the flashback scenes. Playing a single mother with four children and no money, she draws on her own life experiences to pull through a wonderful, utterly believable performance. Showcasing a character who is a devoted mother, and a strong and dignified woman, Ashaji, comes into her own. Ashaji gets three stars for Mai. As for the others… sigh!Visit Site for more

the film's emotional content sees it through. The central mother-daughter relationship is played out at a controlled octave with both Ashaji and Padmini pitching in heartfelt moments that suggest they empathise fully with their characters' emotions."Mai..." often leaves us teary-eyed with its portrayal of a generation that doesn't know how to value its elders. The treatment of the theme is stiff and prosaic at times. But Ashaji melts all our misgivings. Her innate warmth connects well with the audience.
