Vishwaroop Movie Review
Ratings:2.5/5 Vishwaroop Review By: Rajeev Masand Site: CNN IBN (IBNLive)Vishwaroop contains nothing that might offend any community.I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for Kamal Haasan’s Vishwaroop. Vishwaroop quickly loses its way, and more than once during its two-and-a-half hour running time you find yourself asking that familiar question: “What’s going on here?” The twists in Vishwaroop work, and writer-director Haasan shifts between the past and the present in surprising, sometimes spoofy, cuts. The film’s middle portion is set in terror camps in Afghanistan, where Haasan makes a statement for senseless killings in the name of jihad. A lot of it is unabashedly entertaining, although you’ll wish the film was shorter and smarter.Visit Site for more

VISHWAROOP starts off with gusto and Kamal Haasan ensures there's hardly any dull moment in the first hour. . But the post-interval portions lose focus. The writing isn't persuasive in this hour, especially towards the middle of the second hour and even otherwise, the narrative seems prolonged towards the concluding stages. On the whole, VISHWAROOP is a Kamal Haasan show all the way. It has an interesting premise, superb combat scenes and Kamal Haasan's bravura act as its three aces. But a stretched second hour and far from dramatic finale dilute the impact. Yet, all said and done, those with an appetite for well-made thrillers might relish this effort!Visit Site for more

Vishwaroop has to be admired for its scale and ambition. Director-co-producer, co-writer and hero Kamal Haasan is attempting here to launch a franchise for himself. The film is more Ek Tha Tiger than Zero Dark Thirty but parts of it, especially the beginning and portions in Al Qaeda camps, are engrossing. Kamal Haasan actually attempts to give the terrorists a context. And yet the film is too cartoonish to be taken seriously.Still I think it’s worth watching Vishwaroop just to see Kamal Haasan in form, especially as the effeminate dance teacher. I’m going with three stars.Visit Site for more

For a spy thriller that takes bits and pieces from Hollywood hits like True Lies and Indian films like My Name is Khan, Vishwaroopam fails to excite you with its dull pace and insipid action sequences. At times, the film tries to preach what is just and what is unjust, but fails miserably. At other times it subtly tries to spread the universal message that terrorists and terrorism have no religion and succeeds. While it is unfortunate that Vishwaroopam is entangled in a web of controversy, it is equally unfortunate to see Kamal Haasan make a film like Vishwaroopam by pawning all assets he has.Visit Site for more

On the whole, Vishwaroop is too long and tedious to entertain. It has a subject which not many would be interested in watching. It will, therefore, have a very limited run in the cinemas and will bomb at the box-office. The controversy surrounding the ban on the Tamil version by the Tamil Nadu government will not give the box-office collections of the Hindi version much boost.Visit Site for more

An enigmatic hero engaged in a bitter and dangerous battle of attrition with a particularly devious duo of bad guys – that is essentially the simple premise that Vishwaroop rests on. But trust producer-director-actor Kamal Haasan to serve up the good old filmic formula in a well-mounted cinematic package that lends the largely predictable material an impressive veneer. The magnificently executed espionage thriller pits a Muslim RAW agent against a jihadi sleeper cell that is hatching a plot to detonate a nuclear device in the heart of New York.Visit Site for more

Once I was done casting about for things to get offended by, I sat down to watch the film, which turned out to be fairly gripping in true comic-book style, covering such current hot topics like global terrorism, jehadis, Mujahideens, and a few good guys. Not that I didn't sigh impatiently here and there because of some parts being too stretched, or because feeling that it could have finished before it did. But on the whole, once I got past my insistence on realism and wishing it was shorter, I enjoyed the film.Visit Site for more

What’s Good: Pleasurably Entertaining. Dramatically Adventurous. Technical brilliance oozing with great cinematography. What’s Bad: A clear overdose of Kamal Haasan which spares lesser space for other characters to evolve. The narration tediously slows down in the second half. The end was far less climatic that one would have imagined. Loo break: None. Watch or Not?: Vishwaroop is a sheer treat for its power packed action sequences which finally match up to Hollywood’s standards. Technically it is a brilliant film which walks us through many sensitive and pertinent issues without passing a judgmentVisit Site for more

"Vishwaroop", the Hindi version of the Tamil, Telugu "Vishwaroopam", is one helluva entertainer. If you've forgotten what edge-of-the-seat entertainment meant, then it is time to rediscover that pleasure. Stylish and substantial, the narrative weaves and winds its way into coherent and compulsive threads that bring together the theme of international espionage with the more sensitive issue of the Islamic and the personal identity of a man, whose heroic stature grows out of a sense of commitment to the country and to world peace. Insult to any community? Hah! It would be an insult to the filmmaking community to miss "Vishwaroop". Miss this big screen adventure your own risk.Visit Site for more
