Teri Meri Kahaani Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive
this harmless but dull film from director Kunal Kohli feels longer than its two hour running time because of the predictable nature of its episodic narrative. Kohli relies on period sets and costumes to differentiate each story, but alas, a bouffant here, a pathani there can’t take away the sense of sameness that plagues each chapter because of its consistently flat writing.Teri Meri Kahaani doesn’t work despite potential in the premise. It feels soulless and superficial, and is unlikely to find many fans.I’m going with two out of five for director Kunal Kohli’s Teri Meri Kahaani. In one song, Shahid and Priyanka dance inside the Globe Theatre where Shakespeare staged all his plays. Let’s just say the Bard will not be pleased.

However, the film doesn't thrive on all accounts, there are a few dull moments [the present-day story stagnates after a point and the pacing tends to get unhurried, thus making you fidgety and impatient at times], but buried in its experimental storytelling and innate performances is a heartwarming tale that's gratifying and succeeds in planting a smile on your face. Especially the way Kunal concludes the three stories! On the whole, TERI MERI KAHAANI is uncomplicated and charming. Not the usual romantic fare, this one presents three different stories in three different eras without getting theatrical or melodramatic. Thanks to its innovative storytelling, it comes across as the perfect date movie, holding tremendous appeal for the Facebook Gen. TERI MERI KAHAANI is pleasurable and fascinating in equal measures!

Director and co-writer Kunal Kohli attempts here to create an epic romance, a meeting of the souls that transcends time. The concept is similar to Hou Hsiao-Hsien's 2005 film Three Times, but the sensibilities are poles apart. Three Times is a deliberately slow and exquisitely aching ode to love. Teri Meri Kahaani is a banal romance that wants to cover all bases — so in the colonial Indian love story we get a lot of sher-shayari and in contemporary times, Facebook, Twitter and text messages play a key role. But if we are to stay interested in watching the same two people fall in love for two hours, the writing and performances really have to sparkle. Sadly here, neither does

It is unlikely that the rather soulless Teri Meri Kahaani will last beyond the first week in the multiplexes. The film is only two hours long and yet it trudges down its hazy path rather sluggishly and, worse still, goes nowhere in particular. Teri Meri Kahaani can be described as rather harmless fun, if you are in a generous mood and can take its convoluted ways with more than a fistful of salt.So there we go – back to square one. Teri Meri Kahaani is pretty much like the loves of the film’s male protagonist – it pours out all it has. But what is has simply isn’t enough.

Teri Meri Kahaani, with its breezy running time (122 minutes) and frothy leads, continues the tradition in a much better manner than I anticipated. Kohli dilutes the chance of a wholesome, affable entertainer down by his predilection for risk-free conclusions. What's the point of telling three different love stories if you plan to give them a similar finish off? The whole exercise seems plain cosmetic. But till the point the make-up doesn't wear off, Teri Meri Kahaani is a far better film than I came to see.

Kunal Kohli, in an attempt to create a large canvas to paint this love-story - (using centuries, barriers of cultures, castes, customs and costumes) - simply doesn't make the crossover (to the audiences, that is). Even with a powerhouse of talent; the script lacks depth and fails to ignite enough passion or chemistry for a love story. It's not devoid of romance, cutesy conversations and sweet-somethings; but there are no highs, lows, conflicts or complications that make you gush, or give you gooseflesh. To put it simply, this story is - Boy meets girl. Period. Boy meets girl. Period. And boy meets girl. Period...

The pace of the film becomes its biggest peeve: it is slow, there’s absolutely no character development and gets boring after a point. Your interest wanes as after the first story you know what’s happening in the second and third. There’s so much style that substance takes a back-seat, which is pitiable.Waiting for its television premier would be a wiser choice to catch this kahaani.

But what is disappointing is the fact that in case of ‘Teri Meri Kahaani’, neither his midas touch nor the polished star cast is able to save the film’s fate. There is no doubt in the fact that the movie falls flat for its weak plot and storyline which offers nothing new to the audience which they would take home and cherish for days. All in all, ‘Teri Meri kahaani’ is not Kunal Kohli’s best work but still is a light watch sans any vulgarity.

What’s Good: Shahid Kapoor’s versatility; beautiful, warm music; and the old-film-feel minus the over-the-top melodrama. What’s Bad: The extremely slow pace; the mindless love stories; and Priyanka Chopra’s static acting.Verdict: An extremely slow movie where too much has been attempted without any purpose… it all feels pointless.Teri Meri Kahaani has proven to be quite disappointing and it can be easily avoided.
