Bol Bachchan Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:CNN IBN(IBNLive)
Bol Bachchan, directed by Rohit Shetty, revels gleefully in its silliness. This is a film whose pedestrian humor requires neither taste nor common sense to appreciate. Bol Bachchan offers a few genuine laughs, but it’s too long and too labored to describe as a pleasing film. Shetty, who came up with some clever comic sketches particularly in his first and third Golmaal films, appears to be cashing in on past glory with this dull rehash of his successful work.I’m going with two out of five for Bol Bachchan. Even if you’re a fan of Rohit Shetty’s cinema, it’s unlikely your chest will become a blouse over this one!

BOL BACHCHAN works primarily thanks to the entertainment quotient and of course, the persuasive portrayals by its lead actors, especially Ajay and Abhishek. On the flipside, BOL BACHCHAN falters due to its erratic pacing at times. Besides, a few episodes try too hard to make you laugh, but the impact is missing. BOL BACHCHAN has a couple of loose ends that stand out. The culmination, for instance, could've been better envisaged. On the whole, BOL BACHCHAN is a dhamaal entertainer that has the Rohit Shetty stamp all over it. A film that pays homage to the cinema of 1970s and 1980s, especially the ones made by Manmohan Desai. Big stars, big visuals, big entertainment, BOL BACHCHAN has it all.

Rohit Shetty's latest movie has a constant up-and-down aspect to it, one sequence making you shriek in your seat with laughter, another sending your mind wandering off to the mundane. BB's fun and games but it's way too long and diverts you needlessly with that wicked cousin angle, a power plant that doesn't progress out of paper, an odd double-role for Asin, jokes overloading on the cheese at times and music that is surprisingly unmemorable. On the plus side, BB's a dialogue-lover's delight On the downside, it exceeds by about 30 minutes and has that odd, uneven heart-chart quality accompanying the filmDon't strain your brain applying reason to this laugh-riot - but do buy more popcorn for that extra half-hour.

Bol Bachchan is dispensable cinema, forgotten almost immediately after it's over. Shetty picks up all the major plot points of the original only to alter it with his boisterous, cheesy, slapstick and visually flashy sensibilities, known to work hugely in his favour given the success of the propitiously titled Golmaal franchise. Unlike the Utpal Dutt-Amol Palekar starrer, however, Bol Bachchan isn't an out-and-out comedy throwing in large-scale action and irksome melodrama.

There is no attempt at plotting, storytelling, delineating a character, building coherence or following logic. Shetty’s only agenda is to give you a good time.So did I have a good time? I laughed in a few places. But the humour consists of the kind of PJs that you might have giggled at in your college canteen. Mostly, the gags feel laboured. What you get instead is mediocre entertainment, which is almost depressing in its repetitiveness. A fitting label would be: The Cinema of Exhaustion.

This one’s strictly for Bollywood junkies whose funny bones are easy to tickle. Yes, Bol Bachchan is a hot air balloon with no air, hot or otherwise. So expect no genuine comic highsBe warned. Bol Bachchan is a comedy so absurd that it could reduce you to tears of despair. Conversely, if you have the stomach for such rampant silliness, it might propel you into paroxysms of delight. The call is entirely yours.

I laughed more in this one than I have in his previous loud comedies. Devgn is still in `Singham’ mode, chest rippling, not in blouse, but in collared long kurtas and lean jeans, bashing up the bad guys. But because he is a good comic, he does let an occasional line rip. If your nosy is not turned up too high, ‘Bol Bachchan’, less blaring than your standard Rohit Shetty comedy, can give you sporadic chuckles, and a few helpess laughs. Can’t expect more.

BOL BACHCHAN in Mumbai lingo literally means one telling a tall tale. While the concept in itself is good, the way it has been thrust onto the viewer is juvenile. Director Rohit Shetty loses the plot and Abhishek Bachchan, playing the side-kick is a sad sight. In short, BOL BACHCHAN is like a quickly put up 'after dinner play' which one indulges in during their growing-up years to entertain their parents.

Junior B attempts to enthral as Abbas Ali/Abhishek Bachchan, while playing the done-to-death cat-and-mouse role with Devgn . A little too heavily inspired by the 1979 Amol Palekar-starrer Golmaal, unintended dishonesty is the basic premise of Bol Bachchan.Right from the back story to the Karz-style Ek Haseena Thi performance, Bol Bachchan borrows a lot from and seeks to spoof Bollywood films. However it succeeds only sporadically. If you liked the Shetty Golmaals and Singham, this review will only be bol bachchan for you. Have fun while it lasts.
