Turning 30 suffers from an incurable Sex and the City hangover, but it's neither as smart nor as spunky as that popular television show. Turning 30 might have been less frustrating if it weren't for the amateurish writing. The film is accompanied by a grating voice-over by Naina that's so banal, you find yourself rolling your eyes each time she whines about her "man-less", "jobless" life.The film takes a promising premise and fails to realize its potential because it's trying too hard to be cool. I'm going with two out of five for writer-director Alankrita Shrivastava's Turning 30. I think I can safely say I wouldn't want to meet a girl like Naina when she's nearing 40!

TURNING 30!!! has great energy and humor as its aces. I feel, a lot of urban, working, young people will identify with several episodes from the film because it comes across as a slice of life film. Also, Gul's character in the film faces issues that several urban, independent women generally face and therefore, the identification with her character should be immense. But the problem with the film is that it loses focus in its post-interval portions. On the whole, TURNING 30!!! has its moments, but they are few and far between. In totality, however, it misses the mark.Final word? Mixed feelings, honestly. The first half works, the second is long-drawn, the story stagnates and the goings-on turn formulaic. A great idea, unfortunately, doesn't translate into a great film.

Turning 30 is truly a chick flick. It brings to life living, breathing, flesh and blood female protagonists who face real problems in a rat-race world. Of course, our hero here is the urbane, ambitious, independent woman who wants it all, like the man next door. Kudos to Alankrita Shrivastava who makes a refreshing debut with a film that looks at the world through the female gaze. Somewhere down the second half, the script does slip into cliches and the phobia of turning 30 gets a bit exaggerated, but that's okay. For in the end, the smart dialogues, the subtle humour and the fond look at female frailty/vanity in strong women characters makes for some fun viewing. Refreshing, unusual and unlike your typical women-oriented films, Turning 30 marks an addition to the increasing tribe of intelligent women directors.

Turning 30!!! is a collection of cliches running through a harebrained script, where Gul Panag is surrounded by an impressive coterie of non-actors, even as the director vainly, even gallantly, tries to push the envelope.A film can't be both empowering and embarrassing -- and here the latter is painfully predominant. The problems the characters face might well be real; the film, however, is anything but. A laughable mess, this Turning 30!!!. Maybe if it wasn't in English, it could perhaps have salvaged some credibility. Then again, the only thing it shows us is that Gul can curse a helluva lot better than Rani Mukerji did last week.

Turning 30, written and directed by debutant Alankrita Shrivastava, wants to be a sexy, insightful, tough-talking chick-flick – think a desi Bridget Jones’ Diary or Sex and the City. But all it manages to do is make you laugh – unintentionally of course.But what sinks this ship is the lame writing. Alankrita wants to create the modern Indian urban experience so the action takes place in bars, offices, coffee shops and beauty parlors. We have the philandering husband, the token gay man who calls his lover pumpkin and even a lesbian. But the characterization is comic-book and the mostly English dialogue sounds like rejected material from the Chicken Soup series.

The main flaw of the film is that it appears as if you are reading a book. Naina's copious and tripe narrations throughout the film are uninspiring. And you somehow don't feel for her plight. The numerous songs don't add any merit to the film. The climax, with a twist, is reminiscent of Amitabh Bachchan's BAGHBAN. It's dreary to see her whining and crying all the time. It had the scope to be much more humorous.The first half of the film is pretty okay, with some engaging moments. But the narrative plummets post interval and drags. Apart from the decent climax, there is no movement in the story.Turning 30!!! doesn't 'turn' out all right and ends up being a passable fare.
