With the exception of a few powerful scenes that leave you with a genuine lump in your throat, Gupta goes for full-on melodrama that doesn’t always ring true.Virtually every single supporting character is a cardboard caricature, and watching those courtroom scenes in which witnesses are called to testify, is nothing short of sheer torture because of the amateurish acting that’s up on display.No One Killed Jessica isn’t a bad film; it’s just a disappointing one from a filmmaker who showed such promise with his debut film Aamir. This one falls short.I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five for director Rajkumar Gupta’s No One Killed Jessica. It reminded me of a Madhur Bhandarkar film. If you’re a fan of simplistic storytelling, you won’t complain.

On the whole, NO ONE KILLED JESSICA is a poignant story of two women's resolve for justice. It's a remarkable blend of facts and fiction inspired by a series of real-life episodes, which has thankfully not been presented as a tedious biography or in a mind-numbing docu-drama format. It's more of an engaging thriller which has the right doses of histrionics, tautness, anguish and thrills. The emotional and disturbing journey, the strength of the common man and the relentless endeavor of the media have all been most compellingly put together on moving picture. In times of yore, a lot of films have been attempted on real-life incidents, but haven't struck a chord so effectively. NO ONE KILLED JESSICA should shatter this jinx. This heroic and daring film truly deserves a prolonged applause.

From the first phone call which informs a sleepy Sabrina of her sister's death to the candle-lit vigil at India Gate, NOKJ is a racy crime drama that relentlessly draws you in. And when its not the riveting screenplay (Rajkumar Gupta) and the dialogues which hold your attention, it is the actors who grab eyeballs with their power-packed portrayals. The film has an impeccable first half and could do with some editing in the second half. But the high drama, the arresting performances and the spunky audio track (Amit Trivedi) make NOKJ a memorable viewing.

The Jessica Lall murder was a watershed event and Gupta uses this rich material to create a film that is in places, powerful and moving. But it’s also loud, simplistic and somewhat schizophrenic in tone. It’s almost as though the director couldn’t decide on the right pitch and decided to marry understated realism with bombastic drama.This uneasy mix of truth and creative license; subtle notes and heavy-handedness make for an uneven film that in places seems stretched unnecessarily.That said, No One Killed Jessica is several notches ahead of the tripe we’ve been subjected to in theatres lately.I’m going with three stars.

Put your hands together. Let’s applaud this expertly crafted piece of faction,blending a true story with chunky interludes of dramatic licence. Emotionally in-depth and wryfully witty, above all it narrates a story which cries for documentaton. Indeed, No One Killed Jessica, is one helluva knockout of a movie, the sort which lingers in the heart and mind long after its 16 reels have ended on a note of hope and interiorised glory.Here, then, are two powerhouse performances in a power-charged movie. Run for it.

Do you know the feeling when you taste a dish that should be brilliant but falls just short of the mark?.That's the kind of feeling that stays with you when you finish watching director Raj Kumar Gupta's No One Killed Jessica.First off the bat, though, this is a good film, and one that will probably find its place among the best films of the year when the lists come out in December.The script could have been more nuanced; some of the casting could have been better; the final product, for want a better word, could have been 'more finished.'For a film where you know the plot down to the last detail, you still find yourself rooting for the underdog..That makes you greedy enough to want more, to wish that a film, given its conscience-awakening plot, was more hard-hitting!

Rajkumar Gupta’s new film draws a chillingly accurate picture of that cold-blooded murder in one of the best opening sequences I have seen recently.‘No One Killed Jessica’ manages to sustain interest as it makes itself way towards the climactic moment when the culprit, despite the best efforts of his politician father and his fawning courtiers, is nabbed. But the film fritters away some of the tension in trying to divide time equally between its two leading ladies :But this film is more than the sum of its actors’ abilities. It’s important because it brings to the big screen a kind of vivid realism which uses a director’s prerogative to dramatise. Gupta gets good performances from his supporting cast. .

This time, the script is an original one — even though borrowed from real life — and Gupta has woven enough scenes around the plot that entertain, even as he keeps the focus on the underlying serious theme.The characters are spunky, the dialogues brutally real — the brazen language isn’t a tool to shock, it just reflects real conversations — and the editing (Aarti Bajaj) is slick. the film does take a while to get going — but it sets up a fast-paced, explosive second half. In spite of the grimness of the story, NOKJ reminds you of the one positive outcome of the Jessica Lall case — the public, when united, can make giants fall.What a start to 2011! You couldn’t have asked for a film better than No One Killed Jessica (NOKJ) to kick off the year.
