Post intermission, however, the script begins to flounder. The conflicts feel forced and manufactured, particularly a subplot involving their son and his troubles at school. There is potential to dig deeper and ask prickly but important questions about patriarchy, ego, equality in a marriage, and male pride. But the makers have little interest in exploring uncomfortable territory, preferring instead to resolve conflicts quickly and painlessly. As a result, Tumhari Sulu is warm, and light, and funny, but it’s missing heft.

Suresh Triveni’s story is fresh and beautifully presents the life of a middle-class school dropout who suddenly gets a well-paying job but which has a bit of a social stigma attached to it. The first half is full of light moments as the story gives you a peek into middle-class living in Bombay. The film takes a fairly serious turn after interval and there are some heart-touching emotions too which will bring tears to the eyes of the weak-hearted. On the whole, Tumhari Sulu is a heartwarming entertainer and it will, therefore, score at the box-office. Its positive word of mouth will see collections rising.

Above all, Tumhari Sulu is a masterclass in acting. It’s a testament to the skill and smarts of Vidya Balan who lifts an underdeveloped screenplay by just acting the hell out of it. At the end, when Sulu articulates what this job meant to her and weeps, I cried with her. There’s also a stellar moment in which Sulu acknowledges her lack of credentials – she is after all a 12th standard fail. See this film for Vidya. Her unfettered joy will make you smile.

Tumhari Sulu isn't a perfect film, but it is definitely well worth a viewing as much for the quality of the acting and for its technical finesse. In any case, a film is easy to fall in love with when Vidya Balan is this stupendous.

Be it Neha Dhupia's glamorous, easy-going radio head, Vijay Maurya's comically proud poet, Sulu's disapproving twin sisters, the Punjabi receptionist, the 'conjuncti-virus' struck tiffin service, the listener who is reminded of his wife in Sulu's hearty laugh, the well-meaning lady cabbie, every significant and secondary character strikes a chord in Tumhari Sulu with its inherent 'humarapan.'And so it's a bit of bummer when Tumhari Sulu takes a mawkish turn towards the climax to overemphasise its sentiment and almost overstay its welcome.Except, who dare resist that sexy laugh or smouldering Hellooo…?

The film feels repetitive and stretched, making you impatient. And too often, it feels like two films rubbing against each other – a light-hearted comedy about a woman finding a voice, and a heavy family drama. But the film makes up for these niggles by creating a leading lady who is cracklingly alive, dealing with difficulties, and finding a way around them. Sulu is a win.

A middle-aged woman who has not achieved anything great wants to become an RJ & that woman is Vidya Balan! What else do need? But it also has some of the most relatable moments for those who have been brought up in middle-class families. Tumhari Sulu is one of those films which makes you smile while you leave the cinema hall. If not a masterpiece, Tumhari Sulu is a monumental piece by the master Vidya Balan. Watch it to fall in love with Vidya all over again. Three and a half stars!

The first half of the movie is breezy, providing us a glimpse into the life of a middle-class home in suburban Mumbai. Post interval, however, the film switches to the troubles the couple goes through while she is away entertaining a bunch of loners in the city. How the couple recovers from the crux of the film.Head to the theatres this weekend to watch this simple slice of life movie! You can definitely connect with their daily struggles in some way.

The sudden shift from being lighthearted to a serious drama is largely where the film falters. Until then, there are entire sequences, especially with her colleagues which are thoroughly entertaining but don't eventually add up to much. Fortunately, the tonal shifts are not too jarring to disconnect from the story which is easily accessible. A majority of the urban populace will relate to the challenges faced by Sulu and her family, as we all struggle to live out our dreams of a better life.

Vidya Balan’s indomitable spirit is infectious. And that is what makes Tumhari Sulu worth a watch. Having said that, the film is almost 20 minutes too long and that kind of makes you slightly restless. As one said at the start, had the length of this film been slightly trimmed, it would’ve made it twice as appealing. Go for this one — if you want to know the recipe for what makes ordinary people, extraordinary.
