Pankaj Kapur's 'Mausam' is an unfortunate mess of a movie about a pair of young lovers who spend more time apart than together, because they don't know how or where to reach one another when they're repeatedly separated. To be entirely fair, 'Mausam' isn't without its moments. The film's first 30 minutes are fresh and enjoyable. I'm going with two out of five for director Pankaj Kapur's 'Mausam'. As you leave the hall exhausted from the sheer length of this misguided enterprise, you cannot help but note that despite its many flaws, this is a noble failure. MAUSAM has an old-world charm, no two opinions about it however the transition from Season 1 [in Punjab] to Season 2 [in Scotland] seems most unreal. Unfortunately, MAUSAM suffers for the very reason that one may have assumed would be its biggest strength -- writing. The screenplay, to put it bluntly, is unengaging and what makes it worse is the fact that it seems like a never-ending saga. The film just goes on and on and on, moving from one city/country to another, till the viewer gets jetlagged and exhausted by watching this saga unfold on screen. With a running time of close to 3 hours, MAUSAM has a few sequences that do stand out, but the weak script blows the efforts away. Yes, the allure of the first half of Mausam lies in the vintage love story which proceeds through unsaid words, unexpressed feelings, stolen glances and lots of melody (Pritam Singh). The affair which begins in 1992, before the demolition of the Babri mosque has an oriental charm to it and makes for some moments of great viewing.But in second half Pankaj Kapur seems to lose his grip, at least partially, on the story which crosses continents and slips on the natural charm and high emotional quotient that made the first half eminently watchable. Don't be dissuaded however, for Mausam has lots to offer to the viewer who doesn't mind his cinema languorous, laid back and moody, with loads of beauty. Mausam starts off significantly fresh, making up for slightly overdone cutesiness with heart and flavour. The setting is enchanting and real, the characters are likable, the supporting cast stays pretty solid throughout, and Shahid revs up the energy while his classically gorgeous heroine Sonam Kapoor does what she does best, skipping around looking breathtaking. It is when the film changes gear from romcom to melodrama that both Kapur and his son struggle, going from light and likable to irritating and implausible.‘But no lovely little nuance could forgive Mausam its preposterous bad-action-movie climax, completely bringing the guillotine down on the already too-long film. As manipulative masala tearjerkers go, it's a film that tries relatively earnestly and certainly one that occasionally looks striking, but disappoints overall.Visit Site for more

Mausam is nowhere near flawless. Its first half is visually scrumptious and eminently watchable; the second is a touch erratic and unconvincing. Yet Kapur’s well-honed sensibility serves to ensure that the film never loses its grip on its heart even when its narrative flow borders on the dreary. Mausam is overlong and tends to meander rather listlessly in parts, but the debutant director deserves plaudits for daring to put a mighty new spin on his cross-community love saga that spans across several tumultuous decades.Visit Site for more

What’s Good: The music; the performances of the lead actors.What’s Bad: The slow pace of the drama; the inclusion of too many events in the film; lack of emotional appeal; too many coincidences in the lives of Shahid and Sonam.Verdict: Mausam lacks the heart-warming quality of a love story. I feel, Pankaj Kapoor has tried to mix in too many turbulent elements of the past, intersperse them and in the process has ended up burning his fingers. Kapoor has linked events of Operation Blue Star, trouble in the Kashmir Valley, Ayodhya and the bringing down of the Babri Masjid, Bombay Bomb Blasts, Twin Tower strike in New York and Godhra in Ahmedabad. Through these events he links a love story that stands the test of time. Like an overcooked dish, MAUSAM, towards the end leaves a soggy taste in your mouth. Sad. Because as a director, Pankaj Kapoor has shown his class. It's just that he was playing with too many ideas in one go. Give him time and he will be one of our best.Visit Site for more

The first thing that comes to my mind after watching Mausam was that why on earth did it take so much time to complete. Coming to how it is, well you do not expect this Khichdi from a veteran like Pankaj Kapur.Pankaj Kapur in his directorial debut tries to tell a beautiful love story but if only he would have stuck to that, the film would have been a better experience. He touches the Kashmir, Mumbai, Ahemadabad riots and even the 9/11 twin tower blast in America but only from the surface. The plot was excellent only if the focus was maintained. Though the first half is still watchable, the second merely disappoints and the climax is outright stupid.Visit Site for more
