Speedy Singhs Movie Review

Ratings:2/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive
Speedy Singhs' is a bargain basement version of Gurinder Chadha's 'Bend It Like Beckham', borrowing the exact same premise but leaving out the sharp wit of that cross-cultural comedy. On the upside, the film benefits from some clever banter between Rajveer and Russell Peters, who plays the obnoxious fiance of his cousin. The soundtrack has some hummable hits, and leading man Vinay Virmani has a likeable presence. But the film delivers no more than time-pass entertainment because it offers nothing that you haven't been served before.I'm going with two out of five for 'Speedy Singhs'. It's old wine in an old bottle.

SPEEDY SINGHS also looks at the generation gap between the older generation [Anupam Kher, in this case], who hold tightly to traditional values and the younger generation [Vinay Virmani], who have already adapted themselves to the adopted country [Canada]. SPEEDY SINGHS has a plot you can connect with instantly, but the film suffers on varied counts. The writing is patchy, the characters are superficial, the drama doesn't work and even the culmination to the story, which should've been the hallmark, lacks the fizz to make you jump with joy. The film, very honestly, comes across as a poor clone of the successful Gurinder Chadha movie BEND IT LIKE BECKHAM. On the whole, SPEEDY SINGHS fails to deliver.

Speedy Singhs is a smart little surprise package. It's a cheerful film that makes you smile with its subtle humour, its repartee-filled screenplay, its deftness at handling the umpteen relationships and its finely-nuanced performances.More than the performances -- and the hockey matches -- it is the sundry relationships that form the core of the film. A little more spice and edge to the delineation of the game itself would have made the film an action-packed adventure too. Nevertheless, Speedy Singhs, with a guest appearance by Akshay Kumar (as himself), is an entertaining watch.

There is no subtle way of saying this. Speedy Singhs has nothing new to offer us whether it's the struggle to buy uniforms, or the coach changing captains to tone down egos. Yet, the film is refreshing and manages to hold your interest. The redeeming factor is the humour underlying every sequence in the film. Speedy Singhs is about the tiny nuances of NRIs, their ambitions, their goals, their frustrations, their hopes and dreams. If you are looking out for an original script, give this a miss. But if you enjoy family dramas, with lots of laughs and tears go for this.

Speedy Singhs, made from a screenplay authored by lead actor Vinay Virmani, does touch upon questions pertaining to cultural identity, the immigrant experience, the right to be different and the freedom of individual choice, but only in the facile, superficial manner that Bollywood extravaganzas are usually known to adopt.Speedy Singhs is a pile-up of classic dog-eared cliches that rob the film of any possibility of striking flashes of revelation. Looking for any strokes of originality? Banish the thought. Speedy Singhs is a resolutely one-sided game. It’s a sports flick, a family drama, a Hollywood rom-com and a fluffy, feel-good Bollywood ride all rolled in one. Take your pick.

What’s Good: Nothing really!. What’s Bad: The story which is devoid of novelty; the poor screenplay; the generally weak performances of the artistes; absence of excitement of the game of hockey.Verdict: Breakaway is a poor show all the way and will be left behind in the box-office race. Its dubbed Hindi version Speedy Singhs will meet with the same fate.Watch or Not?: Watch Speedy Singhs if you want to see what Chak De! India would not have looked like even if it had gone terribly wrong.

‘Speedy Singhs’ evokes mixed responses. The film falls flat in terms of writing, as it bears an uncanny resemblance to films like ‘Bend it Like Beckham’, ‘Patiala House,’ which makes it quite predictable. Witty dialogues, music, screenplay and decent performances are the strengths of the film. Predictable storyline, language barrier in the terms of English being the language that's primarily spoken throughout the flick, are the weak points. On the whole, ‘Speedy Singhs’ promises to tickle your funny bone with its fine comedy, but a word of caution, it's surely not for masses and that might affect its collections at the box-office.

Not that we haven’t seen or heard about a story like the one in ‘Speedy Singhs’ but there is something about this film that leaves a smile on your face.Speedy Singhs is a refreshing watch with just the right amount of masala. There’s romance, humour, emotions just in the right mix. People will relate to it in one way or the other and then they have added Russel Peters which is a big plus. he story however, reminds you of many films that we have seen before like ‘Patiala House’ and ‘Bend It Like Beckam’. Worth a watch for its humour.
