Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster Movie Review

For where 'Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam' was the poignant portrait of a complex friendship, Dhulia's film is an over-simplistic and somewhat predictable tale of love and betrayal. The film opens intriguingly and maintains an even pace, but it's betrayed ultimately by a confused script that hobbles around in all directions, never quite finding its rhythm. Dhulia knows the milieu, so the film has an earthiness that is attractive, and much of the dialogue is clever. Yet, key dramatic scenarios are handled amateurishly.I'm going with two-and-a-half out five for Tigmanshu Dhulia's Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster - it's inspired by a classic, but let down by its own triteness. Not a perfect film, but one that has its moments

SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER lives up to the expectations, on that front. Though it's not Tigmanshu's best effort, I'd like to state that the film has several moments that bowl you completely, dialogue that deserve an ovation and of course, stellar act by the principal actors of this film. On the flipside, SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER loosens up quite a bit towards the middle of the second hour. The writing could've been tighter for sure. Yet, all said and done, SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER is an interesting and absorbing watch! On the whole, SAHEB BIWI AUR GANGSTER is a well-made film that works for its powerful plot, engaging script, commanding dialogue and super performances. Tigmanshu Dhulia has had the guts to do something unusual within commercial parameters and the effort needs to be lauded

The film is a must-watch for two reasons. First, because it is heavily imbued with atmospherics and mood which creates a whole new world that's somewhat familiar yet totally intriguing. The second high point of the film are its alluring performances. Jimmy Sheirgill, Mahie Gill and Randeep Hooda create a fascinating threesome that never fails to excite with the unpredictabilty of their volatile moves. The film may be a finely crafted drama, yet it unfolds with thriller pace, keeping you on the edge of the seat till the very end. Enjoy the experience of a revised and re-mixed story, well told. Don't like run-of-the-mill stuff? Will surely like this...it's different.

Borrowing liberally from the Shakespearean tragedy Macbeth, Tigmanshu Dhulia's Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster owes more to Vishal Bhardwaj's Maqbool than Guru Dutt's Sahib Biwi Aur Ghulam. It tries to be both, balancing its personal homage spirit with a gripping tale of intricate politics, love and betrayal set against a decadent royalty that's rapidly losing touch with the realities of modern-day existence. Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster is made with the production values of the 90s. Such films ought to create a sense of mystique, if not larger-than-lifeness.Dhulia is certainly an under-rated director who seeks inspiration from small-town India and its crime and political scene. If he is to emerge as a key figure in this movement led by Bhardwaj, Kashyap and others, he must make more films like Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster. Better films, one may say.

Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster creates a world far removed from Guru Dutt's classic, and yet the two works are miraculously joined at the hip. Almost every character from the Guru Dutt film is replicated if not parodied in Dhulia's film. There is even Deepal Shaw playing a modern day version of Waheeda Rehan's Jabaa from Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam.Guru Dutt would have probably choked at this bad land bawdy burlesque of Sahib Bibi Aur Ghulam. Lekin man-na padega, boss. Tigmanshu Dhulia's homage to Dutt is saucy if somewhat uneven in tone and jagged at the edges.

A powerful storyline, crisp screenplay, hard-hitting dialogues and impressive performance make Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster a delightful watch. Slightly dragged second half and editing are weak points, but can be ignored.Saheb Biwi Aur Gangster is surely a milestone in Tigmanshu Dhulia's career, that he will cherish both as a director and producer. So will the cine-goers, who won’t be disappointed. This one's highly recommended!

‘It's the page-turner script that steals the show. It's packed with enough turns, intrigues and twists to hold your attention, keep you guessing. All of it bound by some sort of logic still. At least as much logic as you'd expect from a drama or thriller that doesn't embarrass your basic intelligence. This doesn't.Either way, game-changers in movies aren't necessarily the commercial successes of their years. This one is admirably inspired, is almost a sophomore effort. As you'd know, that's a pretty hefty compliment to pay.

But for all its frills, some of them nicely executed and attention-grabbing, `Sahib Bibi Aur Gangster’ never quite rises above its familiar plot points, and ultimately stodgy story telling. I’ve lost count of the times I’ve seen greedy politicians handing out contracts to greedy contractors bypassing worthy candidates, and the obscenity-laden skirmishes between the warring parties : even the smirks and the `gaalis’ are now standard-procedure.
