Hum Tum Shabana  Movie Review

 Ratings:1.5/5 Reviewer:Taran Adarsh Site:BollywoodHungama
HUM TUM SHABANA may not be the most inventive film made in Bollywood, but, yes, it delivers what it promises -- loads of laughter -- at least in the first hour. But how one wishes the post-interval portions were as rip-roaring funny, since that's what you carry home when the movie concludes. There's no denying that the writing of the film is erratic. The characters are well defined, the setting and situations are just right and the dialogue are sharp and witty. But the screenplay in the second hour doesn't create magic. One doesn't mind watching nonsensical situations as long as the film holds your interest, but it doesn't. On the whole, HUM TUM SHABANA is a good idea gone wrong! It has a funny first half, but a disappointing second hour.

Like the Bheja Fry films, Hum Tum Shabana too is meant to make you laugh. But the entire first half slips through without eliciting a single smile. Post-interval, the proceedings do perk up a bit with the arrival of the girl's dysfunctional family, headed by her uncle, Satish Kaushik who turns out to be an international gangster, hellbent on finding a suitable match for his niece.End result? Just time-pass.

In an unashamed attempt to ape the Golmaal series, Hum Tum Shabana is a rudderless ship which simultaneously endeavors to straddle many genres. And fails miserably. Two men desperately wooing a babe then wanting to dump her (for valid reasons of course) is the central theme of this tortuous, unending so-called comic saga. And to cover up for a plot or a cohesive story the film is loaded with cardboard characters and implausible situations. This film is best avoided.

The film had lots of promise, especially after a rousing first half. It's one thing to get a few laughs, quite another to have the audience in continuous splits. Though the film is not long, a 20-minute cut would have made a world of difference. It's not a deadly comedy, but at least Bellary focuses on his prime motive - to make you laugh.

What do you do with a film which is purportedly a comedy and delivers not one single laugh? This thought struggled to come to the fore, but the poor thing never had a chance, given the relentless awfulness of ‘Hum Tum Aur Shabana’.Not one person on this enterprise would know a genuine laugh if it came and bit them in their behind.

Hum Tum Shabana breaks the rules of a regular love triangle with a twist, but falls flat in its execution. The messy screenplay takes the toll, especially post the interval. The concept, moderate performances by actors and cinematography are the strengths of the film. A clumsy screenplay, lacklustre music and dialogues leave one numb. On the whole, Hum Tum Shabana can be easily given a miss.

The film like other run of the mill comedy films is too filled with varied characters that do no good to the slapstick comedy flick with an added angle of love triangle. The film is a failed attempt to revive the success of multi-starrer-comedy-meets-romance genre that has been utilized umpteenth times in Bollywood. Farhajaan Sheikh’s baseless story and screenplay are full of loop holes. This one is best avoided
