Rascals Movie Review

Ratings:1/5 Reviewer:Rajeev Masand Site:IBNLive
David Dhawan, who’s no purveyor of good taste, plumbs new depths of crassness with this expectedly insensitive film that’s so short on real jokes that it makes light of everything from starving orphans in Somalia to the physically handicapped.Rascals, as it turns out, is an infuriatingly unfunny film. Unless grown men making silly faces is your idea of comedy.I’m going with one out of five for director David Dhawan’s Rascals. Donate your cash to charity instead of wasting it on this wretched film!

David Dhawan  returns with a film that ain't too fresh and reminds you of his earlier venture, Deewana Mastana. The humour in Rascals is too loud and often unfunny while Kangna Ranaut is too hysterical and dumb-headed to evoke all the trouble and attention. Hence we'll pass Rascals and qualify it as a one-time watch....Only because it has a spirited act by Ajay Devgn who seems to be loving his comedy, all over again, and an unusual, totally out-of-spirit act by Arjun Rampal as the tapori. Also, the songs (Vishal Shekhar) are lively and there are a handful of scenes that do make you laugh, a bit.

Let me describe RASCALS in few words: funny, outrageous, hilarious, uproarious and most importantly, entertaining.Be forewarned. RASCALS is strictly for the hoi polloi, those who relish masala entertainers with glee.On the flip side, in the second half, there are some unnecessary sequences that only add to the length in this over the top comedy. The plot of RASCALS is non-existent and Dhawan relies on a series of bizarre set-pieces in which one con man tries to overpower the other and this continues right till the penultimate moments of the film. On the whole, RASCALS is a madcap, over the top, zany entertainer aimed at the masses. It's hilarious and outrageous from commencement to conclusion. If this kind of humor appeals to you, then there are chances that you will relish this one!

For his latest Rascals, starring Sanjay Dutt and Ajay Devgn, Dhawan sponges a bunch of comedies from his own stable and outside to rustle up a series of misadventures that are dumb, dated and dreary. But that's not its only problem. Rascals, with no structure or motive, cannot (rather does not even try to) conceal its desperation to make itself funny. And this insecurity shows in each and every gag.Unless making light of poverty, charity, handicap or a sexed-up version of Andaz Apna Apna meets Jodi No 1 meets Deewana Mastana meets Bluffmaster is your idea of a joke, those laugh lines won't budge.

What’s Good: A few comic scenes; the ‘Shake it saiyyan’ song.
What’s Bad: Lack of a cohesive story; hotch-potch screenplay; irritating dialogues.
Verdict: Rascals is a poor comedy which will fail to make its mark.              Watch or Not?: Watch Rascals if you can laugh at just about anything.

Rascals is what one can call a 'vacation' filmmaking stint where everyone works on the film as if they were on a 'holiday' and the audience is expected to 'leave' their senses behind. The tone of humour is consistently loud and commotional. Expectedly Ajay Devgn keeps screaming most of the time and hams outrageously. Sanjay Dutt is better in comparison, which isn't saying much.Kangana Ranaut is ill at ease in comedy. Rascals ends up being a silly and stupid comedy!

In fact the film looks like one long excuse to let the camera ogle at semi-nude female figures in Thailand and Bangkok. The laughter, if it was ever intended, is strictly incidental The gags in Rascals are so stale and tasteless and the situational comedy so devoid of any kind of originality or freshness, you wonder if David Dhawan just made this unfunny comedy to please his friends who play the major roles in the film.Wanted urgently: A makeover for David Dhawan's brand of comedy. Seriously, this comedy is not funny.

RASCALS does not promise to involve you in the scheme of things. However, it does promise entertainment. If you go looking for logic or loopholes, you'll find plenty. If you just want to have a good time, RASCALS gives you that. And a few good laughs as well.RASCALS is what the film promises... buy your ticket, take your popcorn, and get set for a situational comedy.
