Directed by debutant Bela Negi, "Daayen Ya Baayen" is gorgeously filmed across postcard-pretty locations in the state. Negi uses real homes and schools to give the film a lived-in feel, which is further complemented by the fact that she employs actual locals in smaller roles. It's the scattered script that plays spoilsport here, taking too long to bring up key conflicts.Yet "Daayen Ya Baayen" is a film you desperately want to like.I'm going with two out of five for director Bela Negi's "Daayen Ya Baayen". It goes on and on and on with no destination in sight. It's tiring yes, but also a respectable first film. If you have an appetite for the quirky and unusual, you might not be too disappointed.

DAAYEN YA BAAYEN may have been made with the right intentions, but the problem is that director Bela Negi has shot too much - some good, some pointless - and when you to try to encompass it all, it tells on the final product.  Bela reserves the best for the first hour: the story moves rapidly, the humour is enjoyable and manages a smile on your face and the sundry characters come across so real. But the film loses focus in the post-interval portions. It lacks the meat to carry the story forward, the sub-plots aren't convincing at all and the pacing is lethargic, which makes you restless after a point. In fact, you fervently hope that the film would end soon. On the whole, DAAYEN YA BAAYEN caters to a miniscule segment of moviegoers and even that segment of audience won't feel completely elated at the conclusion of the screening.

The film has been obviously inspired by Vittorio De Sica's Italian classic Hello Elephant. Of course it doesn't stand up to the original in any way. But we aren't complaining. And that's primarily because the story has been suitably `Indianised' and adapted to the bitter sweet Indian reality and has a strong local flavour to it. Daayen ya Baayen works because of the authenticity of its backdrop and the realistic performances by the motley cast.There are quite a few endearing father and son sequences which make you chuckle with glee. The rest of the characters too are archetypal village blokes and instil a sense of realism in the drama. The film does need to be tightened and snipped in places as it tends to ramble on and on. Nevertheless, it manages to hold your attention as a sweet little ironical take on India's lopsided development and its forgotten people.

The ace in the pack of writer-director Bela Negi’s fiercely independent Daayen ya Baayen are its little big people.Affectionate and insightful of rural mores, Negi fashions a valentine to a stretch of India rarely explored by the movies. The plot may be slight. Fortutiously though that turns out to be the film’s vital virtue, avoiding melodrama in favour of a bagatelle of smiles and tears.  Here’s a remarkable effort to break away from the foolish and the formulaic. Shockingly, it has been marketed shabbily. Does anyone even know that it has suddenly been rush-released this week at a handful of multiplexes?For all those who care about defiantly individualistic cinema, Daayen ya Baayen is quite a few steps in the right direction. Sure it may not be the Dabangg crowd’s cup of tea. It’s recommended viewing for those who want a break from the guns, gals and recycled Gabbars.

Bela Negi’s story is of the kind which is more suited for a television serial. Since the story revolves around just one individual and also because there is no larger issue involved, it is difficult for the audience to appreciate or enjoy the story. Like her script, debutante director Bela Negi’s narration has very limited appeal. She knows her job but she hasn’t been able to make the film one which would appeal to a wide spectrum of the audience.On the whole, Daayen Ya Baayen will prove to be a supreme disaster – and not just because its promotion is poor!
