'Ramayana: The Epic' is a serviceable animation film based on popular episodes from the sprawling tome. The animation itself is detailed and impressive, but the film ultimately is weighed down by stodgy writing, and by a narrative that's too conventional for a story this familiar.. Because the film's mostly lacking in imagination and visual inventiveness, what you remember in the end are Lord Ram's washboard abs, and Sita's perfectly manicured nails after a year in Raavan's ashok vatika.For a sparklingly original take on the 'Ramayana', seek out the excellent animation film, 'Sita Sings The Blues'; you'll understand exactly where this one falls short. I'm going with two out of five for director Chetan Desai's 'Ramayana: The Epic'. It's got the scope and the scale; what's missing is the spirit!

RAMAYANA works for two reasons. One, the story [yes, we know the story well, but love to listen to it again and again] keeps you hooked and two, the quality of animation is super. It's difficult to encompass this great epic in a two-hour film [this one's less than two hours], but the makers convey all they ought to convey most effectively.On the whole, RAMAYANA is a must-watch. It's the kind of cinema that should appeal to youngsters as well as adults, the kids and the kids-at-heart.

Here comes an animation film that breaks the mould completely and makes you sit back and savour the eternal superhero story that's told with Spielbergian panache. So many things work in favour of Chetan Desai's Ramayana. First, there is the 3D animation, which is vibrant, colourful and is a fine blend of calendar and pop art.Rama's encounters with sea gods and serpents, the boisterous battle sequences are all spectacle and fun. Even the language is not Sankritised and strikes a chord with the aam aadmi. Shred of all sermons, Ketan Mehta's (producer) Ramayana works like magical pop art: An Andy Warhol version of an eternal Indian superhero.

Debutant director Chetan Desai gives us impressive visuals, grand battles and perhaps India’s first Lord Ram with six-pack abs. But the plodding screenplay undermines these efforts. Ramayana The Epic doesn’t soar enough or arouse the requisite shock and awe.Thankfully, the animation here is more sophisticated than the average mythological such as Bal Ganesh or Ghatothkach. Ramayana is an ambitious step toward better homegrown cinema for children. I just wish it had more crackle. I’m going with two and a half stars.

The story is based on the epic, Ramayana. However, Chetan Desai and Rituraj Tripathi’s screenplay is a job childishly done. Although the story has such a lot of drama, excitement and emotions, all of these have been kept out of the screenplay. Frankly, the story unfolds on the screen like an ordinary account devoid of any emotions. Even the dialogues, penned by Rituraj Tripathi, are commonplace and not of the kind befitting an epic story like the Ramayana. Since the story is common knowledge, the presentation should have been mind-blowing if it was to be brought on screen. But the presentation in this case adds nothing to the drama. Otherwise, the animation is fairly nice.On the whole, Ramayana The Epic lacks entertainment
