There's a thin line that divides unconventional and experimental cinema. SIDDHARTH - THE PRISONER, directed by debutante Pryas Gupta, has an unconventional plotline, but what comes across is quite abstract. In fact, a film like SIDDHARTH - THE PRISONER is more suited for film festivals, not mainstream commercial platform.On the whole, SIDDHARTH - THE PRISONER is too abstract for Indian moviegoers. A disastrous fate awaits this film at the box-office.

A metaphorical film about freedom and desire, the film keeps you engrossed. Firstly, by its explorations on the leitmotif of greed. And secondly, due to Rajat Kapoor's nuanced, almost minimalist act of a man in torment.

there's a message in this movie that makes sense. But director Pryas Gupta kills much of the suspense and drama in the plot with its lethargic pace, and what might have been a watchable film is ultimately a test of your endurance. I'm going with one out of five for director Pryas Gupta's Siddharth The Prisoner. I could use the obvious pun about the audience being the prisoner here, but let's face it, 90 minutes in prison might probably be less boring in comparison.

The movie opens with a verbatim excerpt from ancient scriptures of Rig Veda that says, “ Make me immortal in that realm, where all wishes and longings go ”. With that onset, Siddharth – The Prisoner attempts to explore the theme of renunciation of desire as the true path to enlightenment and freedom. But with that, perhaps you are also supposed to abandon any desire of cinematic gratification from the film, as it offers none.

What the film wants to show us is Roy is finally free of all his problems after he lets go of all desires... there are Buddha quotes in the film to let you know that. But the film suffers terribly because of quite a few things. While we all know Mumbai gangsters (gangsters from anywhere, actually) use foul language, this movie is peppered with words that are unnecessary and do nothing for the story.
