Stripped to its bone, Rensil D'silva's Kurbaan is an edge-of-the-seat thriller that seldom loses its grip on your attention. Credible performances from its leads, and a nail-biting screenplay make up for the plot holes that threaten to eat into this otherwise engaging film. The key problem with Kurbaan, however, is that it can't decide if it wants to be a serious film addressing a burning issue, or a commercial potboiler set against the backdrop of terrorism.Despite its hiccups, Kurbaan works as a suspenseful thriller, sucking you into its drama even though you may have figured out where the story's going.I'm going with three out of five for Kurbaan; it's a compelling thriller that doesn't shy away from touching prickly issues.

You haven't watched a more profound, a more thought-provoking, a more dramatic story on this subject before KURBAAN. It's not just the most powerful film to come out of Dharma Productions, it's the most powerful film to come out of the Hindi film industry this year, thus far.KURBAAN tries to penetrate into the psyche of not just the terrorist, but also someone who has been a helpless spectator all this while. This film is sure to spark off discussions and debates, although it must also be noted that it doesn't take sides or gets preachy. The film has a captivating plot, gripping screenplay, super performances and a climax that shakes you up completely. Watching this movie should be on top of your agenda this week.

Karan Johar’s story has gravitas. Rensil D’Silva’s narrative keeps you on the edge of the seat, for most of the time. Salim Suleiman’s music score has a melodious feel. Hemant Chaturvedi’s cinematography serenades both Delhi, where the Saif-Kareena romance blossoms and New York, where it cracks up. And the performances by almost all the lead characters are gritty. If Om Puri paints a chilling picture of the terrorist who masquerades in the garb of the commoner and Kiron Kher makes the myth of a suicide bomber plausible, then Viveik Oberoi lends credibility to the voice of the progressive Muslim. But it is the chemistry between Saif and Kareena that lights up the film as the duo bring to life a picture of passion and restraint as the doomed lovers. But Kurbaan sure does strike a chord and sets you thinking on stuff that needs to be sorted out before the new world order – a more humanitarian, less violent – sets in. Don’t miss it.

For once here's a film that does not feel long despite the two hours and 40 minutes. And if that's not enough to get you interested, here's the clincher. Kurbaan is bloody smart. In its taut screenplay, stylish photography and good performances by the cast, it keeps you engaged, does not insult your intelligence and avoids getting preachy. this one is executed like a classy Hollywood thriller, with some great moments of suspense, high drama, blood, gore and skin. Go watch Kurbaan, explore it, find your own points to agree, disagree, endorse, enjoy, debate and be angry about.Either way, you definitely cannot walk out without the film leaving an impression on you. And a strong one at that.

Kurbaan starts as a love story, swiftly changes identity to a social film and keeps the viewer engaged throughout with its thriller treatment. Sensibly the romance is kept short and succinct without losing out on the chemistry of the characters. Once the terrorist activity comes to forefront, the love story is fittingly given a backseat as the story intends to highlight and discuss serious issues related to global terrorism. And while dealing with dignified social concerns, the film doesn't compromise on entertainment by adapting a thrilling story-telling technique. The pacing is brisk with sufficient twist and turns never letting the viewer lose interest.Jihad is an outcome of selective thinking. Kurbaan is an outcome of sensitive filmmaking.

Kurbaan, produced by Karan Johar and directed by Rensil D’Silva, constructs this unimaginably tortured situation and then squanders it. The film has ambition but it is too flawed and simplistic to explore issues like religion, violence and the politics of terrorism with any conviction or gravitas. But the performances, melodious music and snazzy camerawork cannot camouflage Kurbaan’s specious logic and faulty writing.Clearly Rensil is a talent to watch. He isn’t afraid to take risks but his ambition and good intentions aren’t matched by the sophistication that this project required. Kurbaan is a disappointment.

KURBAAN is NEW YORK. But with a different set of actors. KURBAAN is also SHOOT ON SIGHT, again with different actors. The plot remains the same, the twists and turns fails to surprise you and the end is inevitable.Technically the movie is sound; acting wise, everyone chips in with a fine performance. The look, feel and action sequences are top class, but then you are not seeing anything new that has not been shown in the recent past. The above-mentioned films are just the recent references.Nothing adds up but for the hyped romance between Saif and Kareena. Both are in terrific form.

There is a consistent feeling of intrigue while you watch Kurbaan. Almost like a time bomb waiting to go off. Debutant director Rensil D'Silva's ability to maintain the intense graph of Kurbaan is the biggest highlight of this film.Kurbaan could have been a tighter and perhaps slightly more engrossing film. But considering it is the director's maiden effort – full marks to Rensil D'Silva. He does well to stay away from any frothy elements at the cost of sacrificing the mass entertainment value. It's mostly a gripping thriller with several shock moments. Give it a shot.
