Director Onir addresses relevant themes, but spares us that self-important tone that ‘issue-based’ films invariably tend to take. The stories in I Am unfold leisurely, and with a silent grace that makes it easy to root for its principal characters.Accompanied by a haunting score, 'I Am' is an occasionally disturbing, but ultimately hopeful film about companionship and acceptance in this judgmental world. I AM is a collection of four stories - each tackling a societal issue. Each of these stories seems straight out of life and the commonality is the emotion called fear. In fact, each of these stories takes the viewer on a journey that many of us may have encountered/witnessed/heard of, but discussed in hushed tones. These dilemmas bruise the Indian society at large and the sad part is that we are generally insensitive, indifferent and uncaring towards them. On the whole, I AM, based on true stories and bona fide incidents, entertains, engages and enriches those thirsting for intelligent, sensible cinema. It is daring films like these that originate legal, social and political change in society. A motion picture of major significance, I AM will also be remembered because it's the first of its kind on the Hindi screen. Go for it!Visit Site for More

I Am is essentially an affirmative assertion of identity and an appropriation of private spaces in a society that has a tendency to use tradition as the most convenient whiplash to beat any and everyone into disturbing conformity. But despite the good intentions and solid performances, I Am works only in fits and spurts. The screenplay, co-written by Onir, Merle Kroeger and Urmi Juvekar, often feels clunky and unwieldy. There are flashbacks within flashbacks and songs, which only slow down the narrative. In the weakest stories – Afia’s and Abhimanyu’s – the dialogue is stilted and awkward. In places, the film seems to carry the burden of its issues on its sleeve. It’s leaden and even boring.In I Am, the craft doesn’t match the courage, which is why I’m reaching out for the equally clunky rating of two and a three-quarter stars.Visit Site for More

How and where does one begin to describe the infinite satisfaction of watching a film that emerges from the closet with some arresting and disturbing home-truths on what goes on when the lights are off ?Tiptoeing through the darkest corridors of the human heart director Onir in I Am comes up with four stories on the question of individual, sexual and geo-political identity. There are no happy beginnings or endings for any of the four protagonists in I Am. Each one creates a universe of sublime sorrow spearheaded by an inability to …well, fit in. As far as indie character flicks go, I Am is in a class all its own.The film does little more than capture the sad truth of characters exploited at a young age. That is not the goal, of course. Though it speaks different languages, compounds various cultures, examines diverse issues in our society and supports an individual's rights and choices, I AM refrains from any judgement nor offers any closure. None of the episodes conclude with a what-next scenario. Like incomplete bits of poetry, it's open to speculation. To some this may be most disconcerting. To some, as good as a reward.It's not a flawless film that will change the course of cinema but a relevant one, funded by more than 400 individuals, that has more on its mind than today's news.Visit Site for More
