With “Crook”, director Mohit Suri raises the issue of racism against Indians in Australia, but reduces that globally relevant concern to an amateurish vendetta story. The plot degenerates into a predictable revenge fantasy, in which the trigger for these racial clashes is an aborted romance. Clumsily scripted, the film focuses more on romance and comedy than the issue it claims to address.The second half in particular is a mangled mess. Colossally disappointing even going by the modest standards of director Mohit Suri’s previous films, “Crook” has neither the slickness of “Zeher” nor the sensitivity of “Woh Lamhe”. It’s just badly written, badly acted, and badly directed.Surely you have better things to do than watch this film!

Known for high concept films, Bhatt brothers' new outing CROOK, unfortunately, tackles the issue half-heartedly. Sure, you expect more from the Bhatts since the makers of repute are known to call a spade a spade, but the problem with CROOK is that the message doesn't come across strongly. That's because it tries to strike a balance between a love story and the racism issue. In fact, it takes a really long time to catch the bull by the horns [read the racism issue] and when it does, it doesn't leave a stunning impact. In fact, it's all superficial. Also, the Bhatts are synonymous with lilting music in film after film, but unlike their earlier attempts, the music of CROOK lacks the quality to linger in your memory. In a nutshell, CROOK comes across as a half-hearted effort.

Crook scores due to its extreme topicality. Director Mohit Suri picks up a tale drawn straight from the current headlines and narrates it with characteristic grit and edginess. The film isn't a smooth ride altogether. Unlike Kalyug and Jannat, Mohit's earlier films, Crook begins on an incoherent note and takes time to get its focus right. Most of the first half of the film is spent -- and wasted -- in the romantic escapades of Emraan with the Indian student and the Australian night club dancer. The story picks up mostly in the second half and makes a meaningful noise: integrate or perish.Watch it for its topicality and enjoy the upbeat audio track

Crook is a film so outrageously silly that you have to wonder if the makers meant it as a spoof.In fact, in the first half, the racism angle seems like an after- thought.The Bhatts – Mukesh and Mahesh – have a long tradition of creating serviceable dramas with melodious music but Crook is hopelessly scrambled—the tragic complexities of the Indian experience in Australia are reduced to one thwarted love affair. I’m going with one and a half stars.

Mohit Suri’s story deals with the issue of racist attacks on Asians in Australia but since the attacks made headline news only for a while not too long ago, they aren’t such a big issue that people would be keen to watch a film tackling the issue. But that is not the main point here. Even a film about racist attacks could’ve arrested people’s attention had an interesting screenplay been woven around the story but Ankur Tewari’s screenplay is weak, to say the least.Mohit Suri’s direction is good but the liberal use of English and Punjabi dialogues on the one hand and the half-baked and quite meaningless issue of racism tackled on the other will greatly limit the viewership of the film. On the whole, Crook lacks the entertainment value and will prove to be a loser.

Though director Mohit Suri has picked a noble topic, the treatment leaves a lot to be desired. He clearly hasn't done much research on the topic and the result is a very childlish film. Emraan, who last impressed us in Once Upon A Time in Mumbaai, fails terribly here. But you can't really blame him. It's the script that's weak.Newcomer Neha Sharma should have chosen anything but this film to make her Bollywood debut as the role and the heavy topic calls for a more experienced actor. She looks good, though.Overall, Crook fails because of weak script and story line
