Baraah Aana starts off as a charming tale of ordinary characters changed by extraordinary circumstances, but it loses direction mid-way. In the end, it's a promising film that delivers only part of what it promises. Which is a shame because it could have easily been so much more. I'm going with two out of five and an average rating for director Raja Menon's Barah Aana; it's a film with many merits, but alas it fails to hold it all together. One hour and thirty five minutes have never felt longer.

Come to think of it, BARAH AANA is more of an experiment. It offers entertainment - the kind the multiplex audiences enjoy - in its own simple way. It strives to strike a balance between real and surreal and succeeds partly. But there's no denying that a film like BARAH AANA also caters a miniscule section of moviegoers. On the whole, BARAH AANA is a fairly engrossing fare. The problem is that the material as also its execution limits it to a tiny section of audience: a handful of multiplexes at a handful of centres.

A mellow, mirthful and at times moving story of three north Indian migrants, "Barah Aana" may not be the ideal idea of an evening out or even an entertainer. But for a discerning audience, this tale of tantalizing possibilities brings in a sense of un-visited surprise

Barah Aana is not as comical as the makers make it out to be. The film highlights the sorry plight of the three protagonists, who are very unhappy with their lives. The second half, however, brings a smile to your face on a few occasions. The story is simple and short, yet, it tends to drag on and on.The film has no songs, helping the story move along well. Overall, the film is worth a one-time watch.

Naseeruddin Shah strikes again this week. As a taciturn driver who has crude barbs and arrows thrown at him by an abrasive memsaab — till he has his revenge. Not quite Aravind Adiga’s Booker winner The White Tiger, but you get the drift.Overall, this is an entertaining effort, with some sure direction, tellingly real characters, and largely efficient acting. A thank you to director Raja Menon is in order for inserting no gratuitous item numbers. What a relief — and it does help keep the film a taut and focused 97 minutes.

While the first half of the film is thoroughly enjoyable, the second half slides rapidly. To Menon's credit, he does succeed in touching upon everyday situations that you can immediately relate to.Watch it for the first rate performances.
