99 actually takes off in the second hour. From the time the lights are dimmed [post interval] to the time the lights are lit again [conclusion of the film], 99 keeps you engrossed in most parts. The only problem is, it's too slow-paced at times and lengthy too, towards the penultimate moments. Just when you thought that the film has ended, another chase follows, which eventually leads to the finale. On the whole, 99 appeals in parts, more towards the second half. The film holds appeal for the youth and should find patronage from this faction of moviegoers at multiplexes mainly. 99 is smart, good looking and interesting, in parts. Quite a ride this, if you don't go with much expectations!

Set in that inglorious year, 1999, when Indian cricketers were supposedly selling off their matches against South Africa on the behest of the notorious bookies, this comedy of errors refreshingly picks up after a sluggish start. More importantly, it views the underbelly of Indian crime and cricket with a tangy, tongue-in-cheek tenor that ensures you never really lose the plot, even though the narrative unfolds in a somewhat disjointed manner. This crime-and-comic caper not only flits between the present and the past, it also switches between cities: Kabhi Mumbai, kabhi Dilli. But always with the unpredictable, threatening to explode round the corner.

99 is not a bad film, but it is not a good film either. Like 13B before it (different genres, similar problems), this movie delivers on its promise in the climax. This movie suffers from many signs of 'first film' syndrome even though it isn't the duo's directorial debut.Entire scenes bear no relationship to the overall story and while it is clear that the running time is padded, it is unclear why.All told, 99 rates a solid B+ for effort and a C for actual delivery -- or in our star-studded vernacular, two-and-a-half of those five pointed little fellas. But really, if you're in the mood this weekend, what else are you going to watch at your neighbourhood multiplex?

99 is set in the year 1999 when communication was going satellite swift in India with both cell phone and internet gaining popularity. Incidentally the film is about connections and cross-connections.99 falls in the same genre of Guy Ritchie’s cult crime-comedy caper Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels with a lot of money manipulation and currency rotation. Thankfully the treatment is not slapstick like its earlier Indian edition Phir Hera Pheri , with sensible writing, credible characters and smart direction.99 makes way for 100% entertainment.

Cricket and betting were two of the major themes in last year's surprise hit Jannat. This year as the IPL fever hots up yet again, you have 99, a film that tells an engaging tale about match fixing, mobile phones and betting.99 is a classic example of a comic thriller. It takes situations that have actually happened and weaves a fictional story around it.Even though it could have been far shorter, 99 comes as a breath of fresh air. Lay your bets on it folks.

"99" is not the film you'd have liked to see after such a long period of deprivation.Where you'd want a big burp-inducing pickled and pappadomed thali, "99" serves up a tangy appertif that you can nibble with pleasure but not quite sink your teeth into.We are the way we are, and what could be done about it? That's the underlining text of this tangy, flavourful often funny but not fully developed plot.
As a famine-breaker it serves its purpose. We are made conscious of how far Indian cinema has come from the time when crime never paid.

99 has its intentions in the right place, it is funny in parts, is well cast and has some quirky dialogues. Yet the film drags, with sequences that seem repetitive after a point, and leaves you unmoved. At best, 99, if it has to be said so, manages to hit a half-century. 99 is one of those films that has all the ingredients to make a mark in a big way, but still has something missing. In these film-starved times, it could be just the shot of Hindi-film entertainment you have craved for in the last 6 weeks. But television is where this film could really make a mark. Watch with no expectations, and you might not be disappointed.
