A charming little treat of a film, Chintuji, written and directed by Ranjit Kapur, is a clever satire that stars Rishi Kapoor as an exaggerated version of himself. The film falters in its second half when the screenplay deviates from the central premise and crams in too much emotional indulgence including a purely gratuitous appearance by a Russian co-star of the actor's late father Raj Kapoor from Mera Naam Joker. Even the climatic scenes in which the actor realises the error of his ways is cheesy to say the least.Despite its flaws however, it's warm and engaging in the end, and far superior to the similarly themed Billu Barber. Watch it because good films are hard to come by. I'm going with three out of five for writer-director Ranjit Kapur's Chintuji; give it a chance, you'll come out smiling.

Sadly, Chintuji is a case of good intentions marred by flawed execution. The first half speaks the language of community; the second half is personality oriented. The switch jars. For instance, using Mera Naam Joker's heroine Russian actress Kseniya Ryabinkina to transform the actor is sentimental but out of tune with the movie's symmetry. Consequently, the film falls between two stools: it neither works as a meaningful parable nor an off-beat comedy.Hats off to Rishi Kapoor, though, for agreeing to play Chintuji, a self-seeking, egoistic and unscrupulous character with his own pet name. The star may have faded away but the actor is blooming in early autumn.

Sometimes, big things come in small packages. The expectations from CHINTUJI are zilch. Even the pre-release promotion is extremely low-key. Also, the awareness is as good as nil. But CHINTUJI springs a pleasant surprise. It packs in a solid punch in those 2 hours. The township [Hadbahedi] is Utopian, but the characters are very, very real. Writer-director Ranjit Kapoor narrates the story of do-gooders, which only reinforces your faith in goodness and humility. Also, CHINTUJI wouldn't be what it is had it not been for a performer of the calibre of Rishi Kapoor. Take a bow, Chintuji! Final word? CHINTUJI is a sparkling gem that deserves to be watched. Strongly recommended!

You may or may not know that a film called Chintu ji is playing at a theatre near you this week. It has released with minimal marketing and no marquee names, except for Rishi Kapoor who plays the lead. But don’t let this lack of fanfare dissuade you. Chintu ji is an unassuming and delightful film that will keep you smiling long after you’ve left the theatre.Chintu ji doesn’t have craft or technical finesse. In parts, it is wobbly and theatrical. The romantic track, which has a patched on sub-plot about the Parliament shooting, doesn’t work. But Chintu ji is a film with heart and an inspired strain of lunacy.

At its heart Chintuji is a simple tale about good values. At one level Chintuji is also a comment on the celebrity culture in India, where people idolise their stars blindly. But what makes it special is the writing. The film has amazing dialogues and extremely identifiable characters. The Utopian but simple premise is reminiscent of those Doordarshan serials from the 80s. The director succeeds in maintaining a lighthearted graph for most of its running time. You will find yourself laughing at several points in the film.Despite some inconsistencies, Chintuji brings a huge smile on your face. It's a heart warming, feel good film.

While the movie is slow paced and some of the sequences unnecessary, Chintuji works at most times. The movie reminds you of those innumerable serials on television in the 80s and early 90s. A touch of emotions in a light hearted fun film, is quite enjoyable. The fantastic direction and brilliant writing, is what makes Chintuji a must watch. The low production values is disappointing, but proves yet again that you don't really need huge sets, great music or big actors to make a good movie. Its the script, direction and performances that are the key.To sum up, Chintuji is a must-watch. Its a delicious feel good entertainer that Bollywood hasn't witnessed in ages. Highly recommended.

‘Chintu Ji’ starts to be a simple tale about good values but touches one’s heart for its simplicity and truthfulness. It can be called a satire on Indian celebrities culture. The direction is excellent, dialogues- fabulous. The songs could’ve been a no-no. Apart from the overdose of drama at the end, everything else seems just perfect.Catch this one, it’s definitely worth the money.
