As a film, BHOOT AND FRIENDS surprises you sporadically [the animation in the second half and the pre-climax, when the kids are thrown in a dark cave, are absorbing], but the problem lies in the fact that it uses the usual stunts and tricks [of kids throwing marbles and nails to make the villains slip on floor/road, kids combating an entire army of villains effortlessly etc.] and also corny and clichéd jokes that look completely out of place in today's times. I am sure, even kids would find those portions ridiculously childish. On the whole, BHOOT AND FRIENDS is decent in parts, but the problem is it isn't the type that would appeal to the kids completely, nor does it have those qualities that would appeal to the grown-ups. Besides, the lack of awareness will make the effort go unnoticed.

Why must our desi story tellers and film makers treat children's films as a neglected step child, a poor cousin that can be passed off as popular entertainment, despite an abysmal lack of the fun element? Our film makers need to realise that an under 15 audience is smarter and more demanding than the adult aam aadmi. Hence writing for teens and tweens and making films for them means giving it your smartest -- not laziest -- shot. The trouble with Bhoot And Friends lies not so much in its acting but more in its scripting and narration. Could have been a perfect year-ender for kids who are in vacation mode, but Bhoot and Friends lacks fire and flair: the essential ingredients that are needed to grab young eyeballs.
