As romantic comedies go Break Ke Baad, starring Imran Khan and Deepika Padukone, is arguably more engaging than recent films of this genre. Yet this film suffers from one key problem that plagued all those movies – clumsy writing.The film’s first half coasts along breezily, drawing its strength from the sheer charm of its leads. So even though the dialogue occasionally has a labored feel to it, and struggles to strum up a coolness that the script doesn’t inherently possess, you’re willing to overlook these lapses because you’re distracted by the stars’ pleasant chemistry.The real problems surface when co-writer/director Danish Aslam resorts to using tired clichés as key conflicts between the film’s characters.Break Ke Baad doesn’t finish with the same promise you glimpsed early on in the film, but it has several moments that are enjoyable.You won’t be entirely bored!

Space is almost like a break-up mantra and BREAK KE BAAD explores this concept rather than being a conventional love story. It has that typical Hollywood inspired urban drollness, approach and responsiveness. BREAK KE BAAD goes wrong, sorry horribly wrong in its writing. The screenplay is full of glitches, the writing is juvenile, the situations are amateurish and I actually wondered how a shoddy screenplay like the one in BREAK KE BAAD was green-lit and approved in the first place. The intention was to make a cool film for the urban youth, but the writers have messed up and how! Final word? A boring fare that gets unbearable after a point!

If Break ke Baad manages to hold your attention, despite its plodding middle, it's only because it speaks in a different tone altogether. Danish Aslam's debut film may be a love story, but there is an underplay, a restraint and a sense of non-drama (the opposite of dramebaaz) that speaks directly to you.The film does have a terribly sluggish middle and there are places where the drama seems to be heading nowhere, but the witty banter between the protagonists does fill in the lacunae to some measure. Nothing dramatic, just fresh: Break Ke Baad is the other flavour of romance. One that you don't find in run-of-the mill Mills and Boon masala.

It would seem Danish Aslam's directorial debut Break Ke Baad is along those lines with its long-distance relationship theme. To think the first hour and half goes off like a breeze with its attractive opening credits, zippy pace, witty rejoinders, slick packaging and two extremely good-looking protagonists. Post-interval, the promise of delving into the complications of long-distance romance begin to dwindle as Break Ke Baad runs out of ideas, spark, focus and momentum, procrastinating endlessly, before racking up yet another addition in the list of far-fetched 'n' filmi fairytale endings.

Danish Aslam’s Break ke Baad which keeps going from baad to worse. Designed as a date flick, the result is Preity close to producer Kunal Kohli’s Salaam Namaste which had also tossed a bickering twosome under the same roof. The screenplay tests your tolerance level from the very outset. For a cushily-budgeted project, the narrative is toothpick thin. How you long for a twist or two in the plot pourri. Consequently, there is precious little by way of a conflict or substantial content.Unsolicited suggestion: take that chocolate bar break instead.

Break Ke Baad, co-written and directed by debutant Danish Aslam, starts off well enough.It’s not the most original scenario but Renuka Kunzru, who has done the dialogue and screenplay, makes it crackle. Imran is saddled with a bland, supporting role but together, the two create some genuine charm. slowly but surely the charm and buoyancy deflates and the film becomes a whiney, synthetic tale of how he and Aaliya find, lose and find each other again.Still, if you must watch a rom-com this weekend, Break ke Baad is a little better than recent outings like Anjaana Anjaani and I Hate Luv Storys. Check it out.

Danish Aslam and Renuka Kunzru’s story is quite interesting because it is about how young lovers in today’s age and time behave – they are in love at one moment and out of it the next moment. It captures the volatility of modern-day relationships effectively. But Renuka Kunzru’s screenplay is good in parts only and, moreover, it is very city-centric.Structurally, the drama is quite engaging till interval but drops down quite badly post-interval. The interest level of the audience picks up towards the climax but it is also true that the ending is predictable. What works very well in the film is the racy first half and the entertaining dialogues between Abhay and Aaliya. What doesn’t quite work is the second half and the absence of entertaining dialogues between the two.

Debutante director Danish Aslam doesn't show us anything which we haven't seen in past. Although that's still fine, the execution is feeble. It starts well, but soon become a test of your patience every passing second. The narrative becomes very dreary break (interval) ke baad. Abhay and Aaliyah move frequently between India and Australia, but there is no movement in the story. There are no twists throughout the film, and the one that is there in the climax, is too good to be true. BREAK KE BAAD is an average affair which doesn't 'break' new ground in romcoms.
