The original story by Ruskin Bond is fertile ground for a thrilling black comedy, but 'Saat Khoon Maaf' becomes predictable early on, when the screenplay falls into a set pattern. Bhardwaj adopts a simplistic, linear narrative, and the episodic nature of the plot allows for barely any surprises. So each husband is introduced, his chink quickly revealed, and his death neatly executed.  Boring isn't a word you'd normally associate with a Vishal Bhardwaj film, but 'Saat Khoon Maaf' seriously tests your patience. I'm going with two out of five for 'Saat Khoon Maaf'. The highlight of this film is that excellent 'Darling' number. The rest is just a blur.

On the whole, 7 KHOON MAAF is a dark film that has its share of positives and negatives. However, the film will meet with diverse reactions - some will fancy it, while some will abhor it. The film will appeal more to the critics/columnists and the festival circuit. However, it is not the kind of cinema that will set the box-office ablaze. Ideally, I would've given a two star rating for this film, but I am going ahead with an extra star for Priyanka Chopra's sterling performance!

First things first. 7 Khoon Maaf is an intensely dark film which unfolds in shadows and silhouettes. So, if you aren't mistakenly looking for entertainment here, you are going to love this half-lit canvas of crime and punishment which lays bare the innermost recesses of a tortured soul. Vishal never once slips and lets go of his hold on this intense study of grief and grime. From the very first shot, which explodes with a grimacing Priyanka pulling the trigger on God-knows-who, the director inexorably draws you into this welter of passion and crime. All the death play takes place in semi-darkness: an almost outward pouring of an evil soul. Serious, sensitive and stirring, 7 Khoon Maaf is a whole new cinematic experience. Watch how Indian cinema is metamorphosing into something more substantial and glocal.

Vishal loosely tethers his tale to reality – television, radio and newspaper headlines reveal which year we are in - but mostly this fantastical story happens in a dark Neverland. But this mysterious gothic world of murderous servants and their mistress who keeps cobras as pets, needed to be more fully realised and our journey into it needed to be far more seductive and engaging. For me, 7 Khoon Maaf was a disappointment. I’m going with two and a half stars.

7 Khoon Maaf may well be about a demented deity with a fetish for husband-killing, but -- incredible as it may seem -- it is a strikingly boring film.More than that, in fact, this is a cute film. A very adult story told puzzlingly like a children's fable, this Ruskin Bond adaptation never quite shakes off the artificial affectedness and comes across only as a silly film masquerading as a smarter, cooler, deeper one. Its lines mostly overwritten with both cloying mawkishness as well as childish over-exposition, 7 Khoon Maaf is often just being precious -- while not really worth all that much.

Sorry, however valiantly you try to connect with this saat-saat, it’s a lost cause. Is it a night-black comedy? A kill dil? A serial murder fest? A saga about a wronged woman who launches into a sado-masochistic spree? Or gee, is it just a tale full of sound and fury signifying nothing?Answer: perhaps it’s all of these. Not quite. Bharadwaj’s Seven-up-‘n’-down is as weird as an airplane without wings. It just doesn’t take off, as if it was caught in congestion on the tarmac.Honestly, the title is not to be taken seriously. Not even Ek Khoon Maaf please.

The narrative is intriguing and slowly grows on you. It makes you wonder, what would you do if you were in Susanna's shoes. The film gets a bit predictable after a while but the engaging screenplay makes sure that there aren't any dull moments. The gradual ageing of Susanna from a 20 to 65 year-old is deftly shown. On the flip side, you wish some of the stories were a bit more compelling and justified. This is what prevents the film from being an outstanding one. A captivating story and excellent performances make 7 KHOON MAAF a bloody good film. Make sure you attend the weddings.

Bhardwaj’s screenplay tries to stick to the book, but the limitations of film are blatant as transitions do not always convey the passage of time. One woman on a murder spree sounds enough to give you the chills, but still the thrill factor remains elusive. Chopra’s acting skills cover most of the flaws in the screenplay. All in all, no words can fully express the wicked experience of 7 Khoon Maaf. Go catch it for some ‘bloody’ good performances and a great storyline.

Ruskin Bond’s story may be interesting and intriguing but the takers for this kind of subject among the Hindi film-going audience won’t be too many. There are a lot of questions that remain unanswered by the story writer and the screenplay writers viz. Matthew Robbins and Vishal Bhardwaj. Frankly, the biggest flaw of the script is that it doesn’t evoke the audience’s sympathy for Susanna. She smokes, she consumes alcohol, she sleeps with so many different men.On the whole, 7 Khoon Maaf is for the elite audience in the big cities only. The general masses will reject it.
