Director Parvati Balagopalan has chosen an interesting story, but hasn't been able to stretch it for two hours convincingly. In fact, there's no movement in the first hour. The three characters [Vinay Pathak, Gul Panag and Anuj Chaudhary] keep talking randomly, without coming to the main issue. Besides, the conversation, most of the times, is absolutely bland. There's a flicker of hope in the second hour. A few sequences are interestingly handled, but what gets served eventually and the time it takes to reach the culmination, the entire journey is so yawn-inducing.On the whole, STRAIGHT is as confused as the protagonist in the film. Disappointing!

The film is a breezy exploration of the twin bogeys that most Indian men have about their sexuality. First, they are embarrassed by their virginity -- you can't not have done it by now! -- and second, they still like to play it straight. Alternate sexuality is very much in the closet and most men -- and women -- would be traumatised to find their hormones acting strangely. Low key and light-hearted, the film cruises along untrodden paths, with Vinay Pathak cementing his place as a tedha-medha (read unconventional) actor who successfully dares to go solo.

Despite the occasionally pretentious dialogue and the low brow comedy, Straight does have a few enjoyable moments. If that's enough for you, then perhaps you'll give this film a chance. I'll go with an average rating at best, and two out of five for director Parvati Balagopalan's Straight. It's an opportunity lost. A confused film with no clear end in sight.

There's nothing objectionably bad about the movie, and while it starts off promisingly, it finally leaves you with absolutely no reason to recommend it to anyone. There are some quirks, but the vaguely handled characters are sadly predictable in the way they iron out those kinks. And the direction is so, so amateurish you begin having second thoughts about buzzless multiplex movies.

The problem with Straight is that even though there are quite a few funny scenes, not all of them blend as seamlessly as they should in the storyline. So the film ends up dragging, the narrative staggers and the less-than-impressive songs slacken the pace even further.Straight could have been so much funnier. But somehow it just manages to lose the plot and your interest.
