UTT PATAANG is a smart film, which gradually sucks you into its world. What sets it apart from comic-thrillers is the fact that the entire drama takes place in a single night. On the whole, UTT PATAANG springs a pleasant surprise. It has a novel premise and what makes it even more appealing is the way the subject material has been executed. In fact, it's a difficult film to conceptualize, pen and also execute and should be appreciated by those who have an appetite for out of the box themes. Final word? If out of the box themes are your choice, head for UTT PATAANG right away. This one's no utt pataang film in the name of entertainment!

So what's engaging? Ordinary bloke Vinay Pathak's interludes with mysterious stranger Mona Singh. But the same Vinay Pathak simply blows it as the Pink Panther-like gangster with his unfunny French and his overdone gigs. Equally disengaging is Mahi Gill's moll act which strangely lacks all the spark she displayed in Dev D. Sadly, the actor is still looking for a foothold in Bollywood despite an impressive debut. Intermittently interesting, Utt Pataang has a problem of plenty. You've seen this so many times in experimental gangster noir.

Utt Pataang has been scripted along the noir tradition and is restricted to little over one night which turns into a nightmare for all those involved. The narrative moves in a non-linear fashion and especially during the first half of the film manages to keep you involved. The second half of the film especially once Saldanha makes his appearance runs out of steam. But it picks up pace again and ends with an ingenuous climax...But debut director Srikanth Velagaleti does get one thing right. The script is tight and remains focused. No extraneous characters, no unnecessary incidents and no moral judgments, either.Utt Pataang is interesting provided you enjoy comic capers with a hint of romance.

Although Utt Pataang is off to a slow start, devoid of humour or intrigue, it picks up pace and the director effortlessly untangles the plot.Utt Pataang's almost Shakespearean comedy induced by confusion works in favour of the director. Every character's quirks are rather amusing, be it Ram’s simple, straightforward dialogues, or Nandu’s witty one-liners or Lucky’s quirky obsession with French. The film may not boast of a solid plot, but the screenplay makes up for it.Watch Utt Pataang not for sheer entertainment but for the way it pulls you into its story. An enjoyable film, Utt Pataang is definitely paisa vasool.

Director Srikanth V. Velagaleti uses the noir style efficiently. The pace is slow initially but the narrative slowly grows on you slowly. The style of narration which tells the story from each character's point of view is ingenious. There are numerous twists which keep you engrossed. On the flipside, it drags a bit post the interval, only to come back strongly in the hilariously tumultuous climax. There's a side-splitting scene in towards the end which has Nandu mouthing philosophical kahavats.Quaint, uproarious and intriguing, UTT PATAANG is a little gem that shouldn't be missed.
