Raat Gayi Baat Gayi has the ingredients for a movie one would probably enjoy very much, but somehow they never come together. Not so much a raucous comedy, Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is in fact a slice-of-life 'relationship movie' in which characters yak solemnly and endlessly about fidelity and betrayal. There are a few nice touches here and there, mostly the casual exchanges between characters and the natural performances, but many key scenes - including the centerpiece seduction sequence between Rajat and Neha - are heavy in dialogue and lacking in action or drama. As a result, the pace drags and boredom sets in.

Director Saurabh Shukla makes a sassy attempt to tell you how. Yet sadly, the film that begins so smartly -- great characterisations, witty dialogues, funky situation -- peters off into a somewhat pheeka climax, with our protagonists being forced to do an Akshay Kumar (hide in a closet). Now that's unwarranted because Raat Gayi... isn't supposed to be a run-of-the-mill comedy like De Dana Dan, is it? And awkward situations in slice-of-life cinema are generally resolved more realistically. Nevertheless, the film does augur for interesting viewing, providing an opportunity for a roll call of the entire current art house ensemble cast.

Making an adult comedy that talks of one night stand is tough. But giving the serious issue a humorous take is tougher. You may draw parallels with THE HANGOVER because the protagonist can't recall anything that happened the previous night. But it must also be said that the film throws a few surprises, which makes it completely different from any film, past or present. But there's one factor that throws a spanner. There's not much meat in the story. Also, it unravels at an excruciatingly slow pace. In fact, the wheels start moving only towards the penultimate 20 odd minutes, when the answers start coming. In a nutshell, RAAT GAYI, BAAT GAYI? offers a few laughs, not laughter unlimited!

With a head-spinning narrative about the aftermath of an intoxicating late night party, Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is like wine that takes time to mature but is your perfect partner on a lazy evening. Though not as exceptionally hilarious as Bheja Fry or as deeply poignant as Dasvidaniya, Raat Gayi Baat Gayi (from the Rajat Kapoor – Vinay Pathak camp) is entertaining in its own small-n-smart way. Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is not everyone’s cup of tea – rather glass of wine. But then again it’s not targeted towards teetotalers of cinema. This one night stand is worth indulging for some wild-wacky-wicked fun.

Directed by Saurabh Shukla, the movie rests on a thin premise. In fact, the entire plot is set around one drunken night and the chaotic morning after. On the face of it one could draw parallels to the cult comedy The Hangover. But this film is nothing like that one.And even though there is no concrete storyline, the situations are interesting enough to keep you engaged.Post interval the pieces begin to fall in place as the skeletons tumble out of everyone's closet. But these secrets take far too long to unravel.Raat Gayi Baat Gayi is very funny in parts, held together with delightful performances. Catch it for some spontaneous acting.
