They couldn't have come up with a more inappropriate title for the new Akshay Kumar starrer than De Dana Dan, a term usually used to signify something quick. The thing is, Priyadarshan's latest comedy is anything but quick. At two hours and 40 minutes, it's a laboriously long, patience-testing exercise in idiocy about some 20-odd characters stuck in a five-star hotel where mistaken identities and misunderstandings result in loud arguments, comic-book action and crude humor.Over the years one has lowered one's expectations considerably when going in to watch a Priyadarshan comedy. De Dana Dan is no different.I'm going with one-and-a-half out of five for director Priyadarshan's De Dana Dan; carry ear plugs with you, or a Saridon. Or both. A migraine is guaranteed.

Be forewarned. DE DANA DAN is the most bizarre film from the maharaja of laughathons, Priyadarshan. Be cautioned. DE DANA DAN is a loud film, with each and every character screaming on top of his/her voice, with the characters shouting, running, even floating and swimming in the end. But what do you expect in a Priyadarshan film that has a title like DE DANA DAN? The promos never promised path-breaking or thought-provoking cinema that would give birth to debates and discussions. So why look for logic in this one? This one's not for the hard-nosed types, but for those who worship escapist cinema. Who want to chuckle, giggle and chortle at those mindless jokes. In short, DE DANA DAN is a pure dhamaal entertainer!

Hara-kiri, did we say! Or is it simply a case of bad judgement. Whatever be the case, De Dana Dan is a film that begins soundly and then slips into cuckoo land, only because the primary characters and their story is side-tracked for a compendium of tertiary tales. And these too, are so confusing, you keep losing the plot and the character count even though you desperately try and keep pace with the mayhem in this marriage that mostly transpires in a hotel in Singapore.Too many characters in the second half, too long drawn a climax (and completely over the top too). De Dana Dan delivers in bits and pieces alone. The humour is mostly slapstick and the plot wafer thin. Most of the laughs are provided by Akshay's Sad Sack butler act coupled with some rib tickling hysteria by Paresh Rawal. No, this one's not quite the end-of-the-year laugh riot.

Priyadarshan, refusing as always to call himself a director -- 'filmed by,' proclaim his credits -- attempts to stitch together this ragtag quilt in his usual style, ending up with a stupidly elaborate monstrosity. All manner of morons -- philanderers, dognappers, murderers, hookers, marriagable daughters and dumb-waiters -- congregate in a plush Singapore hotel, and chaos ensues. Big surprise.Yet the film has been a damp squib right from the get go. The flaccid first half never quite recovers, and while the second half musters up a few genuine moments of mirth -- mostly because Manoj Joshi's face turns positively scarlet in anger -- it's too cruelly long to really help things. Also one suspects those rare second-half laughs occur simply because one is mindnumbed into submission.

De Dana Dan also almost marks a decade of the widespread acceptability that the slapstick genre has gained in scarcity of sane comedies. As the name suggests, De Dana Dan is a quickie flick which is hastily written, rapidly filmed, has swift storytelling and speeding characters giving you no time to breathe, gasp, feel, absorb react or relate. The film takes time to kick-off and nothing much happens in the first half. The second half gains momentum with cross-connections of characters inside the hotel. The more you attempt to keep a track of the individual tracks, the more it confuses you. The less you try to join the links, the more it binds you. What could have been the USP of the film, acts against it with the comic chemistry of Akshay-Paresh-Sunil clearly missing.

The movie
starts out funny but gradually becomes more and more exhausting. The film sticks to what seems to have become the standard formula for Bollywood comedies. You recall Daddy Cool, Do Knot Disturb, All the Best De Dana Dan is one more from that school of laughter. The film gets more tedious as the plot gets more convoluted and by the climax, in which everyone floats around as the hotel gets flooded, I could barely keep my eyes open. The humour is so labored that I felt like someone was beating me to laugh. I’m always happy to revel in pedestrian comedy but De Dana Dan feels more like work than entertainment.

De Dana Dan will almost certainly end up giving you a headache. Unless you revel in comedy where every character shrieks and screams, women are spoken of in a degrading manner and loud decibel levels give you a kick, this one's not for you. Not that the film does not have its moments. But when in a 2 hours, 45 minutes movie you barely chuckle a couple of times and laugh out loud once, there's reason to worry. The audience may have been kind to the actor-director duo in the past, but with De Dana Dan they seem to be taking viewers for a ride. Now, that kind of Hera Pheri is unacceptable.

De Dana Dan follows the 3Cs of a Priyadarshan comedy – cash, confusion and lots of chases. Faithfully obeying his own template, the director could might as well have made this film in his sleep. It's a film targeted at a mass audience looking for a light hearted joy ride at the theatre. Though the jokes and situations are not exactly new, the fast paced treatment elevates the impact of the film.De Dana Dan doesn't aspire to be a Hrishikesh Mukherjee or Rajkumar Hirani product. It's got its goal clear and delivers what it promises. It would be harsh to run it down by drawing unnecessary comparisons with classic comedies. De Dana Dan has tremendous entertainment value. Given the style of most Bollywood comedies - De Dana Dan is the funniest film of the season.
