West is West' packs fewer laughs than the earlier film but it’s engaging and thoughtful nevertheless, and benefits from strong performances across the board, especially from Om Puri who expertly reveals the vulnerability behind George’s gruff exterior.I’m going with three out of five for 'West is West'. Not a bad way to spend a lazy Sunday afternoon.

West is West stands on its own, even though it carries forward the story of the man who struggles between his twin identities: George Khan, the Pakistani-Brit who runs a modest eatery and Jehangir Khan, the Pakistani farmer, with family, property and roots in rural Pakistan. And that's because the film carries one simple message that needs to be reiterated, the world over: East may be East, West may be West, but people are the same, despite their superficial differences. The performances are all impressive, specially by Om Puri and Ila Arun. The humour is delightful. But what finally takes your breath away is the soulful music of the film rendered by the nomadic Sufi Saeen Zahoor.

The real triumph of this seriocomedy is its writing (it reminds one a lot of Hanif Kureishi); it conveys the themes of cultural clashes, self-discovery and the fragile relationship between a father and son.The film reaffirms one's belief in Thoreau's words, "How vain it is to sit down to write when you have not stood up to live." If the writer hadn't experienced it first-hand, West is West may have lost some of its realness that makes it endearingly relatable.

East is East had strong characters, real laugh and big heart. In comparison West is West is oddly diminished .This painful clash of civilizations is diluted by the clunky dialogue and poorly etched characters. But Sadly there is too little of this and too much of strained emotions and limp laughs

A balmy, tender film, full of lyrical design, cinematography, and music, it was clearly crafted with a great deal of love for its subject matter. I am certain that generations of scattered desis will add it to their collection of classic confused desi cinema. A family film or an adult film meant to be experienced with childlike pleasure (and popcorn), This film is made to be seen with the heart and shared.
