Two things about this film make it immensely watchable. First is the striking topicality of the film. Like No One Killed Jessica, Monica too draws its flesh and blood from real life drama and is ostensibly inspired by the Shivani Bhatnagar case. Atleast the dramatis personae are the same and include a journalist who becomes a pawn in a political game and ends up losing her life for it. The second thing that stands out in this low-on-hype film are the performances. Almost everyone pitches in a stellar act and creates characters that are credible and intensely human.Don't be mislead by the title (no, it isn't a morning show film) and don't be foxed by the low key publicity. This one's truly a surprise. Check it out.

Heroine’s on the run. Minister, editor have sent out goons to hunt her down. She gets killed at a Lucknow apartment. Narrative goes back and forth. It’s hard to tell what’s going on. Courts hear the matter. Telecom minister, now about to become chief minister of Uttar Pradesh (Ashutosh Rana), attends hearings everyday. The lawyer finally reveals the truth. He brings in a blackboard to the courtroom, draws three circles: "Media, Industry, Politics". At the intersection of this Venn diagram is Monica. If the three circles gang up, they’ll form one circle. Who would they have to eliminate? You got it. "Judge sahiba" is impressed. Murder mystery is solved. Who would not pay for this priceless education? I would.

Some films desperately try to be hatke and the process, become too absurd for your liking. MONICA is one such film. Director Sushen Bhatnagar tries to have too many sub-plots and the non-linear editing adds to the woes. The courtroom sequences are insipid and lack drama. While the narrative moves like a pendulum between past and present, the store barely moves. Monica ends up sleeping with most of the characters, which is baffling. You don't feel for her character at all. The flimsy dialogues like 'If I do you, you are finished' provide unintentional laughs. The hotchpotch film is a disappointment. MONICA, no my darling!

Evidently, there’s no dearth of topicality. Every recent murky scandal involving sex, power and politics and vulnerable woman seems to be here. But the film doesn’t quite know how to do sleaze without being sleazyThis could have been an important film, because it tells an important story of simmering small towns, predators who take advantage of women who never know where to draw the line, the dizzying pulls and pushes of absolute power and corruption. ‘Monica’ has the intention, and a couple of effective performances, ( it’s good to see Ashutosh Rana after such a gap), but doesn’t keep up with its execution.
