On the whole, 13B is interesting in parts, not in entirety. Also, as mentioned earlier, films of this genre, the world over, have a shorter duration [1.30 hours or 1.45 hours] and the approx. 2.28 hours' running time would test the patience of the viewer. At the box-office, with cricket matches on one hand and examinations on the other proving major oppositions, this scary movie would prove to be a scary proposition for its investors.

PC Sreeram's photography lends an eerie chill, and he does it without resorting to the excess use of darkness. There's also some credible acting from Madhavan and Neetu Chandra who plays his unsuspecting wife. Still, the film is at best an average thriller, not least because it leaves a dozen questions unanswered and the viewer overcome with fatigue. Two out of five for director Vikram Kumar's 13B. Sadly it tires you more than it scares you; it's hardly what I'd call a must-watch.

It's an interesting tale, told well, with all the mandatory twists and turns in all the right places. Adding to this, is the complete spontaneity of the ensemble cast, ably led by Madhavan who is extremely endearing as the yuppie, torn between the supernatural and the real. Watch out for some zippy cinematography, a stylised monochrome tint and some snazzy editing. Great timepass. Go for it.

From the sound design to the performances to some of the camerawork, 13B plays like bad late night television or graduate school theatre. Still, the conclusion of the film and the way the premise of the spooky television show is woven into the fabric of the main story makes it all work out. One simply wishes it didn't have to be such hard work getting to the point, for the filmmakers as well as the audience.

If you like horror films, this one’s par for the course, especially in the first half, where Vikram K Kumar uses the TV set for an interesting premise, the actors do their bit and the camera picks up suitably weird angles. But the second half deteriorates into an ear-shattering scream fest.

But what could have been a taut, crisp horror flick is watered down to a certain extent by its length. At a running time of nearly two-and-a-half hours, 13B is little too long for a film of this genre. In a season of big budget turkeys, this relatively small film comes as a surprise. It's got its share of weaknesses, but succeeds in giving you the goose bumps on more than one occasion.

Vikram K Kumar is not just a smart storyteller and a proficient technician but has also extracted credible performances from his cast. R Madhavan is excellent as the central protagonist of the film, troubled by the TV. He adds absolute conviction to his character and is largely responsible in adding life to this tale of dead.13B promises big entertainment while weaving a story around the small screen. The film spooks you with its (serial) killer of an idea.

The film is a must see for Madhavan’s superb act. He brilliantly conveys the dilemma that he faces and his vulnerability in handling the bizarre situations around him. Just don’t miss 13 B, it not only engages you but also gives you the right chills and thrills just when you don’t expect them. It is one of the most intelligently made thriller in recent times in Bollywood. Go watch it.
