In Mom, her first Hindi film since 2012’s English Vinglish, Sridevi isn’t merely expected to do the bulk of dramatic lifting, she’s required to pretty much distract you from noticing the film’s many problems, including the gaping script holes, the flawed ideology, and the fact that you’ve seen this movie before. Many times actually.Mom is a far from perfect film, but it’s never boring. Sridevi’s terrific turn makes up for many of the script problems. I’m going with two-and-a-half out of five.

#OneWordReview... #Mom: Superb. What works: Relevant theme, taut screenwriting, effective background score and skilled direction. Sridevi is the lifeline of #Mom... Bravura act... Towering performances by Nawazuddin, Akshaye, Adnan and Sajal... Recommended! .

The film's predictability is not as much an issue as its messy climax that loses much of its drive and darkness to accommodate wishy-washy masala tropes, an ill-timed Rahman ditty and reckless ideas of fair play. What it never loses sight of is its leading lady's invincibility and for that alone, Mom's the word.

Sajal Ali, in the role of the troubled daughter, matches the veteran of 300 films step for step. Adnan Siddiqui is unwaveringly solid as the doting father and ever-beholden husband who stands like a rock by the two women. Not always an easy watch - it isn't meant to be - MOM wields a heavy mallet, but it does so with purpose, precision and panache. Not always an easy watch - it isn't meant to be - MOM wields a heavy mallet, but it does so with purpose, precision and panache.

But the film overdoes it, and leaves even someone as capable as Nawazudin struggling to overcome a spectacularly ugly hair-piece and a sketchily written part. He plays Detective DK, who is to be seen playing a wholly inexplicable game of hide-and-seek with Devki – Why shouldn’t a client and sleuth meet in public?

Mom reminds you for the umpteenth time that we're in Nirbhaya country. Like other films on the same subject, debutant Ravi Udyawar's emotional thriller tells you that India, or should that be New Delhi specifically, isn't safe enough for women, especially young girls. And its relevance makes it an important watch. There's a lot packed in here. To begin with, the film dwells on the dynamics of a teenager's standoffish relationship with her stepmom. This entire track is beautifully handled. Then again, it is post the teenager's abduction and assault when the film reveals its true facet.

On the whole, MOM is a powerful film that reflects the horrors of the society that we live in today and how the world still remains unsafe for women. The film shocks and impacts you deep within. Watch it for it’s hard hitting content and Sridevi's brilliant performance.

But is effectively a statement on seeking revenge, poetic justice, and redemption. The thought might make you understandably uncomfortable. But it serves the purposes of this picture quite well. And while most thrillers tend to overstay their welcome beyond 90-minutes' screen time, this one doesn't feel almost two-and-half hours long. If anything, far too much is going on here. You might question a lot. But so much of it works.

Mom Story:

Devki, a loving wife and mother of two beautiful daughters seemingly has a perfect happy family, yet somehow true happiness of being a mother eludes her. Arya, a sensitive girl, believes a daughter comes into a mother's life, but a mother does not enter that of a daughter. Devki patiently waits for Arya's love and acceptance as she believes only a mother can truly understand the silence of her child. An unfortunate incident widens the distance between Arya and Devki, to a point of no return. In such a situation a mother has to make a choice - not between "what is wrong or right', but between 'what is wrong and very wrong." MOM is the story of what will a mother do in such a situation. Will she fight for her daughter's love knowing the consequences she may have to face?
