Any promise that Jia aur Jia may have held of taking a fresh, original approach to the idea of a ‘girl-bonding’ story is dispelled literally minutes into the film. Make no mistake, this is your standard odd-couple narrative disguised as a road-trip movie, and it’s crammed with every cliché you can possibly think of.At a mere 92 minutes Jia Aur Jia still feels overlong and also unmistakably boring. A holiday in Sweden has never felt like such a slog.I’m going with one-and-a-half out of five.

A random drunk dude in Sweden of mixed heritage (Arslan) bumps into these women and makes one of them go weak in the knees by spouting gems like, "Main ameer hoon, main kuch nahi karta."Even terminal illness comes across as a joke eventually and that's when you give up decoding this film, which hopes to teach you how to live. While Kalki still manages to evoke emotions, Richa seems shockingly out of place.Nonetheless, it's not about the actors, this one lacks humour,

In Sweden, the two run into an Indian lad, Vasu Bergman (newcomer Arslan Goni) - Ingmar must be turning his grave - and go on a wild romp on a beach with him. While one of the Jias lives it up, the other, true to form, looks for a way to end her life. The audience, on its part, wants the film to end.

A random relationship, involving pretty pink gowns and bewildered priests and marriage vows, crops up. There’s also a thread about death and dying, which leads to teary interludes, but we’ve long stopped trying to make sense of it all.

What’s Good: It’s a film entirely shot in Sweden, so good for the film it’ll get the travel subsidy. But, again, that’s good for the makers so I guess we’re left with nothing. Oh! yes, the movie is just of 90 minutes. So! Yes, one good thing. What’s Bad: When there’s nothing good, let’s play a guess game what will be bad (Oh! Yes you’re right).Loo Break: You will wish for a weak bladder throughout the film.Watch or Not?: There a lot of eventful things you could do with the precious 90 minutes of your life, like watching a better film maybe?

Jia Aur Jia’s saving grace is that it resurrects Jiya o jiya, the title song of the Asha Parekh-Dev Anand classic Jab Pyar Kisise Hota Hai, for its background score. The music makes the opening scenes memorable, but when the entire remix of the song is sung along with the closing credits, the effect is completely ruined: Nisschal Zaveri’s Jiya o jiya reprise – performed by Jyotica Tangri and Rashid Ali – is flat in comparison with the original. Jia Aur Jia is flat, full stop.
