On the whole, Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana has an interesting first half but its dull second half ruins the chances of the film at the box-office. Given its ordinary initial, the film will prove to be a flop fare.

Ratnaa Sinha’s Shaadi Mein Zarur Aana ticks all Bollywood boxes -- romance, drama, revenge, songs et al. But beyond the song and dance routine, the Rajkummar Rao-Kirti Kharbanda-starrer also shines light on gender inequality, dowry and corruption, holding a mirror up to us as a people.

The plot looks straight out of the 80s, with its implausible ‘revenge’ theme, the characters who look ‘seedha’ but are totally ‘ulta’, and a leading lady who is presented as a modern, thinking girl, but is given very little agency or a mind of her own. Her one big desire is that she wants to work after marriage. Satyendra aka Sattu’s response, smitten as he is with her pretty-in-pinkness self, is instant acquiescence. Along comes the contrarian mother-in-law, thundering ‘iss khandan hi bahu naukri nahi karegi’, or mothballed words to the effect, which have no business belonging to a film in this day and age. Naturally, things go asunder.

Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana? Ignore the invite. But if you still want to give it a shot simply because of Rajkummar Rao, heed this advice: he has done, and will do, infinitely better films? Wait for the next one.

Sinha fails to create an impact with her story, which feels like a drag 15 minutes into the film. The melodrama is too much, the pace is too slow and the second half is unbearable. In fact, this movie will test the patience of quite a few cinegoers, who might be tempted to walk out anytime in the second half. If I had to summarise the film in one sentence, it would be, 'Is shaadi mein mat jaana (Don't attend this wedding)!'

The film could have been much better than it eventually turns out to be. But if you don't mind watching a modest family drama, reminiscent of the 90s, you won't mind being privy to this emotional alliance.

Kriti Kharbanda looks cute and pretty as small town girl. Her dialect is commendable, but again the script is so clumsy that she seems to overact in few scenes. Rest of the star cast does a fair job.Overall, Shaadi Main Zaroor Aana is strictly enjoyable only in parts. Don't expect it to be an interesting affair as it might give you a headache in the second half.

Rao’s Satyendra shows two shades. He starts off as the youthful, warm-hearted young man unaware of the biases towards him as a boy child waiting to come of age. In the latter half he’s the cold-hearted and bitter officer determined to bring down the Mishras who so badly humiliated his family. Rao interprets both with expected nuance and control.A mash up of Badrinath Ki Dulhania and Bareilly Ki Barfi, Shaadi Mein Zaroor Aana is one romantic drama that even Rajkummar Rao’s reliable performance cannot rescue.
