 The new Manoj Bajpayee starrer Rukh is a story about letting go of a loved one while accepting the person that you’ve become. It deals with the familiar theme of a young man’s coming of age, but it’s told through the grief of a young son struggling to wrap his head around the mysterious circumstances behind the death of his father.I’m going with three out of five for Rukh. This is a heartbreaking indie about saying goodbye that nevertheless ends on the high note of hope.

 Atanu and DOP Pooja Gupte capture the misery of Mumbai – the cramped living spaces, the frantic deal-making, the mechanical emotions. The city is marked by crowds and corruption. But as the film progresses, the narrative of teenage angst and the mystery of Divakar’s death grate against each other. The plot becomes more stilted and less convincing. The final twist is nicely played but by then, restlessness has also set in. Rukh is intermittently engaging but it never feels essential. Still there is enough flair here to establish Atanu as an engaging new voice.

 The film is not bereft of humour either, as is employed through the dialogues by Vasan Bala. Lyrics by Sidhant Mago are poetic and blend naturally with the film's theme, as does the music by Amit Trivedi. The cinematography by Pooja Gupte is refreshing as she keeps a majority of the frames interesting and doesn't let the film become a dull, dark exercise.It's a rare, mature thriller that delivers the goods and keeps you engrossed. Don't let this small film slip under the radar, because this will stay with you long after you leave the theatre.

 Rukh makes no sweeping, startling, macrocosmic statements about growing up, parenting and business ethics. It glides smoothly from one revelation to another, occasionally falling back on flashbacks but never succumbing to the temptation to over-articulate, as the young protagonist navigates the pitfalls of finding his feet in the face of grave adversity and an absence of a safety net.

 If there is any stance of this writer that he found challenged was that films do not need aggressive promotional campaigns to make a mark. All a powerful film needs is a good first impression through the trailer, which packs in a substantial chunk of the story, and the ability to tell much more which surprises the audience who choose to give it a chance.

 Manoj Bajpayee is every bit the businessman who wants to realise his dream in a liberal economy. It’s really difficult to reach to the core of his character. He binds the story together and gives the director a chance to exploit the gloomy feel of the story.Rukh has its own narrative technique. To categorise Rukh as an art-house film would be an injustice to Atanu Mukherjee’s talent. It’s a ‘different’ film, for the want of a better word.
