Omung Kumar’s direction is good at places only, but is found lacking at others. He seems to be more concerned with getting the location, ambience and setting right but he needs to realise that without good content, these don’t really matter. On the whole, Bhoomi is too clichéd and boring to appeal to the audience. It will flop at the ticket windows.

Bhoomi is not just a bad film, it is a bad film trying to be many good films. As the background score gets shriller, the film takes turns trying to be NH10 and Ghayal and Pink. And while it is laudable for a action movie to have a message - this film is apparently talking about rape, character and consent - it must first be a watchable film. This is not.

Sanjay Dutt’s umpteenth ‘comeback’ is a 70s style worn-out rape and revenge film, reeking of staleness. Under the guise of striking a blow for feminism, Bhoomi is, mostly, disturbingly voyeuristic.yes, the film does pay lip service to the notion that a girl, after being violated, has every right to let live ‘with her head held high’. But only after we’ve been shown, in gory detail, the abduction, the leery faces of the rapists, and the ugly enjoyment of the neighbours.

Distasteful as it may sound, rape and retribution seem to dominating Bollywood. After Maatr and Mom, Omung Kumar, who showed a spark with Mary Kom, seems to have fallen into the trap of making formula. And while every filmmaker argues that movies on rapes are 'socially-relevant'; you keep asking yourself—is all the gore on screen justified. Watch Bhoomi for Dutt. He's from that era of larger-than-life heroes who get you to whistle even when he is killing people. You may not approve of his thirst for blood but you can't fault his swagger.

BHOOMI suffers from two major problems. Firstly, it comes too late in the day. Audiences have already seen KAABIL, MAATR and MOM which were also similar films dealing with rape and revenge. Hence the impact of BHOOMI gets diluted. Secondly, the film takes too long to really get into the revenge drama zone. On the whole, BHOOMI comes across as a decent entertainer with power packed performance by Sanjay Dutt. At the box office, it will have to compete with other releases for its share of footfalls.

The biggest flaw lies in the script. It is convoluted and over-plotted, as a whole which eventually becomes an overwrought tale that hardly has anything novel to offer. The film tells you that India isn't safe for women, especially young girls but in the recent times films like 'Pink', 'Mom' and even 'Maatr' have dealt with the subject in a mature way. 'Bhoomi' is not quite the re-entry to Bollywood that Dutt's fans had been expecting. But it still justifies a trip to the theaters just for the man.

Bhoomi is better dressed, better filmed and better performed than the old-fashioned revenge drama it actually is. And the big differentiator is that this film has Dutt showing us that his wrinkles have their own stories to tell. While the idea of an eye-for-an-eye and taking the law into one’s hands is hard to justify, Dutt’s performance is affecting. He’s tender, he’s tormented and helpless, and when he’s vengeful, you feel his pain.

The film starts at a low curve and stays there, while you keep hoping for it to climb. The filmmaker tries too hard to make the ending dramatic and our interest curve remained at its lowest throughout. If you had a rough week and want to pep yourself up by watching a movie, this isn't for you. But if you are a Sanju baba fan, who can stop you!

Ideally, the actor and its director Omung Kumar should beg their viewers for forgiveness for subjecting them to a film that delves into a grim subject like gang rape and reducing it into a pulpy, masala-filled mindless entertainer. It made for an exhausting watch. Their methods of revenge are silly and their sudden transformation from being underdogs to a revenge-crazed duo defies belief. The second half is filled with scenes directed at showcasing Dutt’s machismo and strength. The climax — where an army of women in colourful dupattas point fingers at the rapist — looks staged. And Dutt’s transformation as an intimidating, imposing father who will avenge his daughter’s rape, reeks of patriarchy. Even the method used to exact revenge is uninspiring.
