Like Rob Reiner’s classic Stand By Me, also based on a Stephen King bestseller, the new film tackles big themes like the loss of innocence and the enduring friendships of youth. But this is a balls-out scary movie that doesn’t skimp on the gore or the thrills.I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for It. This is a smart, visceral horror movie with charming characters and a sense of time and place that anchors the story. I was so involved, I barely looked at my phone.

What works in the film's favour is that it acts not only as a strong entry by itself but also as a build-up to the inevitable and now essential sequel. Rest assured - King's nightmare is alive, freaky and endearing at the same time. If you're a horror fan, don't miss 'It'!

With It, Muschietti has made one of the best horror movies of the year. It’s funny and warm and touching and frightening and profane and profound. It’s a terrific set-up to what is going to be a restlessly-anticipated Chapter 2. It floats. You’ll float too.
