What flies is the tone and the treatment. Helmed by Patty Jenkins, who directed Charlize Theron to her Oscar win for "Monster", the film has a buoyant feel to it, very different from the dark, cynical undertones of Zach Snyder's films.Wonder Woman doesn't reinvent the wheel, but it's a hugely entertaining film that packages the familiar with a lot of flairs. I'm going with three-and-a-half out of five.

Directed with wholesome ardour for the source material by Patty Jenkins, Wonder Woman is an awe-inspiring combination of wit, warmth and wallop that's found a smooth, sensitive, sinewy embodiment in real-life goddess Gal Gadot. There's a lot more to it than the obvious. It's a magnificent superhero vehicle, a sparkly love story, a touching coming-of-age and a befitting hurray to girl power.

her first appearance in ‘Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice’ was well received, especially as Diana Prince a.k.a. Wonder Woman managed to stand her ground alongside two comic book behemoths. She continues to ride the wave in her own solo film, adding some much-needed confidence to the DCEU but more importantly doing justice (pun obviously intended) to the iconic female superhero. Jenkins’ vision for this film is a blend of an uplifting and humorous outlook that has been sorely lacking in the DCEU till this point, infused with a strong sense of morale. That said – this is undoubtedly the strongest DCEU outing till now, one that will add a new world of (female) fans to the franchise, and for all the right reasons.

The director balances spectacle with contemporary concerns, and even though the movie tips towards political correctness – Steve’s companions all represent marginalised communities – and gets its plotlines a bit muddled up, the filmmaker ensures the one element missing from several recent comic book adaptations – wide-eyed wonder. In a movie filled with striking imagery (the accomplished camerawork is by Matthew Jensen) and visual effects, one of the most empowering shots is of Diana emerging out of the trenches, ready to fulfill her destiny and rewrite received Hollywood wisdom on a woman’s place in the movies in the process.

To say Wonder Woman is the best DC universe film doesn’t say much considering the incredibly low bar set by Batman v Superman and Suicide Squad. On the bright side it’s definitely an improvement over those two films, with Gal Gadot delivering a fun performance as the human ass kicking goddess, and if you’re into explosions there’s plenty of that in the film for your enjoyment. The climactic fight between our heroine and the bad guy has some emotional value and makes it seem like the stakes are high, which is a nice change from the soulless action of the previous movies. In any case Justice League now seems more interesting than it did before.

Wonder Woman has been the subject of so much superfluous fuss, it’d be easy to forget that behind all of the hand-wringing and both symbolic and real pressure to succeed there’s actually a movie meant to entertain. She is the perfect Wonder Woman –a true blue hero who’s as believable in her bafflement of women’s fashions and social mores as she is dead-lifting a tank and swatting away machine gun fire with only her arm cuff. I never cared about Wonder Woman before. Now I do.
