In the end the film is the same old comedy of errors that we’ve seen so many times before. Anil Kapoor is the secret sauce of Mubarakan whose incredible timing uplifts many a dull patch. But the film is unmistakably indulgent and over-long, and could’ve done with some serious pruning. Right now it works only in fits and starts. You’ll laugh, but not throughout. Let’s just say it falls somewhere in the middle on a scale of Ready to No Entry.I’m going with two out of five.

I’m happy to report that Mubarakan does not sink to these depths. This film has more narrative that the usual Bazmee film. There is an attempt at telling a story and creating emotion. The characters have some texture – not the leading ladies though, who redefine the term decoration.Toward the end of the film, Karan asks Kartar – aap thake nahi ho abhi tak? I wanted to tell him that I didn’t just get exhausted in the two and a half hours that it took for Karan and Charan to find their partners. I’ve aged.

On the whole, Mubarakan is a definite winner at the box-office. It is an excellent entertainer which will fetch rewards for all concerned. But it must be added that its fullest potential will definitely not be realised because of big-budget and star-cast films releasing every week from next week onwards.

Arjun Kapoor is far less consistent in his double role, but he does strike a few purple patches along the way, demonstrating a comic flair that cries out for a better film than this one. The script gives Athiya Shetty the rough end of the stick. Her character, as Kartar says at one point, is like a tennis ball being lobbed back and forth between Charan's side of the court and Karan's without being allowed any agency of her own. Mubarakan, however, gives Ileana D'Cruz far more space and she makes the most of the opportunity.

That clean dialogues, written sensibly, entertain and charm the movie-goers.That using common sense to captivate the audience works remarkably well and is much appreciated too.And that is where Mubarakan, after Andaz Apna Apna and Hera Pheri (you can list your best comedy films in the message board below), scores big time. There is no doubt in my mind that I'd watch Mubarakan again and again just for its clean dialogues and clean comic punches; just like Andaz Apna Apna or Hera Pheri.I can bet that you won't disagree with me.

Anees Bazmee who has made a career of dishing out gags and funny one-liners, goes at this one again with gusto. And you do find yourself amused at times.Giving away too much will spoil the fun that you’re meant to have watching this. So you just have to go through this garrulous, laugh-out-loud affair with the usual patience and perhaps even some perseverance that you usually reserve for Bollywood comedies such as this one.

Some of Priyadarshan’s most likeable comedies also deal with an army of actors and a confusing thread in the climax, but he doesn’t waste much time in clearing the confusion. Bazmee takes time here as some of his characters go for long monologues. This slows down the pace and gives the audience a chance to realise the loopholes in the otherwise over-simplified story. Mubarakan is designed as a family film where comedy is generated through quarrelling relatives. This works initially but goes out of control later. But that doesn’t mean you won’t be entertained. You’ll be occasionally laughing, but probably won’t be leaving the theatre with a big smile on your face.

On the whole, MUBARAKAN is a fine entertainer that should appeal to the family audiences big time. It has a strong Punjabi element that should enhance the film’s prospects in North India, Canada and Australia. At the box office, it will have a good ride for a week as it comes sans any competition. Worth a watch.

The story is funny and the film has some really hilarious dialogues. However, sardar jokes are a bit clichéd and Bollywood needs to get over it. I loved the way the film builds up the confusion but it tends to drag towards the climax. Their are moments when you will feel it is patriarchal, racist and regressive. Also, the climax is a bit predictable. The film leaves you feeling good and happy. An enjoyable weekend watch with kids.

The story by Balwinder Singh Janjua and Rupinder Chahal sets the film in the Sikh space. Loud characters, bright sets, songs and dances and slapstick humour dominate this Anees Bazmee film. But the instances do make you smile. Elements of humour are scattered through the film - The Punjab di mitti packaged phrases such as ‘Jatt ko jet lag nahi hota’, ‘Bade mel milaapi ho’… make for some laughable moments. The second half of the film drags a bit, though it has some lighter moments. If you look for progressive thought in the film such as how families still dominate their children’s choice of a partner, how religion and prejudices in parent’s generation are imposed on their kids’ choices in a partner, then you are barking up the wrong tree. But if you brush that aside and judge it purely as a comedy, you‘ll laugh at izzat ka falooda …

Mubarakan Story:

Arjun Kapoor appears in a double-role as Karan and Charan. Karan is born and brought up in London, and Charan is born and brought up in Punjab. Karan is in love with Sweety (Illena Decruz), but his marriage gets fixed with Binkle (Athiya Shetty). Charan is in love with Binkle, but his marriage gets fixed with Sweety. All of this confusion happens because of Karan's maternal uncle and Charan's paternal uncle Kartar (Anil Kapoor), and now it is upto him to solve this issue..
