 On the flip side, the male characters are almost all dominating and unsympathetic, thereby perpetuating the popular feminist stereotype of men. The film’s ending too comes off as contrived and clunky, one of the only bits that doesn’t ring true. But these are minor hiccups in a bold, honest film that hits the right notes. I’m going with three-and-a-half out of five for Lipstick Under My Burkha. It’s accessible and entertaining; that rare film about empowerment that delivers plenty laughs. Make sure not to miss it.

 These seemingly average women have rich inner lives, which grip you. But eventually Lipstick Under My Burkha trips on plot. Post-interval, the multiple story strands become more forced – a scene which reveals Leela’s mother’s job is especially jarring and the shoplifting sequences are unrealistic – Rehana steals clothes and shoes and noone notices. It all leads to a finale that feels both, a tad contrived and unsatisfying.Lipstick Under My Burkha has clumsy spots and contradictions. But there are moments here that you’ve probably never seen in a Hindi film.

 Lipstick Under My Burkhabusts many a myth and serves the purpose of lifting the haze of prudery that generally surrounds the portrayal of women in Hindi cinema. It throws the whole shebang into the pot - the result is a big, big bang that is bound to ring in our ears for a long, long time.

 A line from Zebunnisa Bangash-Anvita Dutt’s well-placed song Le Li Jaan goes, “12 takke byaaj pe, hassi hai udhar ki,” and the notion of this taxed independence is what defines the movie perfectly. Lipstick… may not drastically change things for women, but it’ll certainly smudge a few boundary lines.

 With all the hue and cry around it, you would expect a film that is all about sex. Except, this isn’t. Lipstick Under My Burkha is a simple story about four women and their dreams - of financial independence, of becoming a singer, of moving to a big city and of simply, enjoying life. The fact that these desires remain hidden from the society makes their desires seem like adventurous trips. Lipsticks, in the film, are these desires while the patriarchal society is the Burkha. .

 A song I love goes: where do you go to my lovely, when you’re alone in your head? Lipstick Under My Burka takes us into that space, and lets its characters out, to start walking down forbidden paths, finding support in sisterhood, and in the recognition that we all have shades of Rosie in us. It is a film to be celebrated. Take a bow, producer Prakash Jha, director Alankrita Srivastava, and the entire cast and crew. And now excuse me while I go looking for my deepest, reddest lipstick.

 So of course Lipstick Under My Burkha could potentially upset many, many people. It has the ability to grab a person by the collar, shake them up and make them feel unsettled even if they refuse to introspect. I am willing to bet that Pahlaj Nihalani’s Censor Board will not be the last conservatives unnerved by this feisty, disturbing yet celebratory film.

Set in the crowded lanes of small town India, a burkha-clad college girl struggles with issues of cultural identity and her aspirations to be a pop singer. A young two-timing beautician, seeks to escape the claustrophobia of her small town. An oppressed housewife and mother of three, lives the alternate life of an enterprising saleswoman. And a 55 year old widow rediscovers her sexuality through a phone romance. Trapped in their worlds, they claim their desires through secret acts of rebellion.
