Miss Lovely Review
I’m going with three out of five for Ashim Ahluwalia’s Miss Lovely. Selected to play in the prestigious Un Certain Regard section at the Cannes film festival in 2012, it’s an unconventional watch, yes, but it’s also refreshing to see a different kind of Indian cinema make its place in the world.Visit Site for more

While the first half takes the viewer through a series of events, sequences, action, drama, sex trade, skin show, sleaze etc., the viewer is left wondering as to what's the relevance of the film's title to all this. It's only in the second half that the reality dawns on the viewer. However, the problem is the slow pacing that acts as a roadblock. On the whole, MISS LOVELY is worth a watch for its taut screenplay, fine performances and the detailing that has gone into recreating the bygone era. At the same time, it caters more to aficionados of meaningful cinema!Visit Site for more

In places, I struggled to understand the narrative. And beyond a point, the lack of dramatic momentum was frustrating. Ashim’s characters are fascinating but in places, his telling is labored and self-conscious. I really wanted more clarity. And yet I recommend that you see Miss Lovely. Yes, it is an acquired taste. But Ashim Ahluwalia’s distinct and intriguing voice is one more sign of how fundamentally and excitingly the Hindi film topography is changing. I’m going with three stars.Visit Site for more

The story, by Ashim Ahluwalia, is quite scattered and it does not really engage the viewers. The characters, enacted by mostly new actors, haven’t been established because of which comprehending the drama becomes even more difficult. Also, the entire film has a very depressing feel to it, making it so much less enjoyable for the audience. The climax is dull, drab and dreary. On the whole, Miss Lovely is a fare more suited for the festival circuit. At the box-office, its run will be far from lovely. Flop.Visit Site for more

Dark, disturbing and disorienting, Miss Lovely is the sort of film grips viewers by the gullet and drags them into a claustrophobic crevice. In other words, it isn’t an easy film to watch. It demands total attention and a willing surrender to its unusual narrative rhythm. The visual texture, the editing patterns and the sound design of this provocative portrait of Mumbai’s dystopian sex-horror film industry of the 1980s are all aimed at generating discomfiture.Visit Site for more

Documentary filmmaker Ahluwalia has shot this film in a docu-drama style, with retro-arty feel, taking you into a blast from the past. But the plot unfolds at a lethargic pace, with long-drawn scenes filled in with few dialogues. Some crucial scenes lack the emotional depth and connect you'd expect, inhibiting us from empathising with the protagonists. Nawazuddin shines brilliantly even in the smoky shadows of this sexploitative world, Niharika and Anil play their parts well. The film is stylishly sleazy, that's what works for it. Watch it for a retro-ride into the naked innards of a soft-porn world and its bared bosoms.Visit Site for more

A much-touted film festival favourite, Miss Lovely is a frustrating film. Neither does it go forward, nor does it go back -- it only keeps a steady pace where it is like a creaky old rocking chair. The script is not exactly Miss Lovely's strong point. But the film has achingly pleasurable performances from the cast and the brilliant sound design. The one good thing about watching Miss Lovely is that now when I tell people that I've watched it, they might mistake me for an intellectual.Visit Site for more

It makes no excuses for any of its characters, but it does tell us where they are coming from. It has no distracting schmaltz, but a great deal of empathy. Ahluwalia gives us marvelous atmosphere, terrific detailing, just the right grunge and grain in the characters and an unexpected emotional punch: this is a film I want to embrace. This is a film that unsettled me, and moved me. This is also a film I will savour for a long time.Visit Site for more

Some will appreciate Miss Lovely for its experimental arthouse style. Others will hate the film and call it a slow, story-less and pointless exercise in indulgence. But those like me and most desi D-grade horror fans will be fascinated to see (and hear) how 80’s low budget Hindi horror movies were made and delve into the unglamorous world of their production. Miss Lovely breaks a lot of ‘Bollywood rules’. You can bristle about its indulgencies but I'll still prefer a movie that fiddles with the rules over an easy commercial one. Especially if it has a climax that features blood and a Nazia Hassan song.Visit Site for more

Miss Lovely is superbly acted, exquisitely shot and brilliant directed. Donning a sinister look, the film traverses you through the Ramsay-ish era of 80s’ Bollywood which is conspicuous of its mystically grey ambiance, sleaze and the horror it entailed. Ahluwalia has made one challenging film which shatter the typecast of commercial movies that this industry comes up with. With its dangerously done climax, the film is extremely bemusing and yet every bit fantastic. A sure shot must watch.Visit Site for more
